Kimber Leigh is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning independent filmmaker, actress, director, and author whose work spans more than two decades and reflects a deep commitment to truth, healing, and soul-driven storytelling. Based on the Big Island of Hawai‘i, Kimber has become a cinematic voice of authenticity and resonance, known for fusing emotion with purpose in each of her creative projects. She was recently featured on the cover of FilmmakerLife Magazine (Issue 121), where she shared reflections on storytelling, curiosity, and the journey of independent filmmaking.
Her professional journey began on the stage and screen, where she appeared in more than 35 films, produced over 14, and directed seven productions to date. While Kimber is often the heart of her narratives, both in front of and behind the camera, her artistic impact extends far beyond performance. She is an intuitive storyteller who crafts works that aim not only to entertain but to awaken — sparking reflection, connection, and healing.
Kimber's filmography is rich with range. In 2024 alone, she released two internationally celebrated documentaries: Together in ALS: A Wife's Perspective (chronicling the raw journey of caregiving through ALS) and Taking Your Crack at Filmmaking (a behind-the-scenes look at indie filmmaking). Her poetic short script The Woman in the Mirror, a haunting psychological tale of generational trauma and healing, has already garnered multiple festival selections. She also co-directed the comedic sci-fi short Invasion of the Space Vixen and produced its reflective companion documentary.
Kimber’s documentaries often bridge education and advocacy. Her ongoing project Pick It Up, America! (2025) is a powerful public awareness piece focused on ocean safety, marine responsibility, and environmental respect. It features local voices from Hawai‘i, underwater footage, and urgent yet hopeful messaging for both tourists and residents. In tandem with this environmental mission, she is developing a documentary on the Maui Fires and the survivors of the devastating 2023 wildfires, honoring the resilience of both the land and its people.
Beyond the camera, Kimber is the author of several books, including the award-winning memoir Greta GarBitch, the poetic photography collection Ku‘u Aloha: Frames from the Big Island, and the inspirational title From Underdog to Top Dog. She is currently expanding her creative catalog through her digital storefront, The Lighthouse Café, on Ko-fi, a hub for downloadable journals, quote cards, and reflective blog essays. Her Ko-fi blog series, also titled The Lighthouse Café, chronicles the inner landscape of indie filmmaking with titles such as Step It Up!, I Need More Time, and Indie Misfits… Or Quiet Revolutionaries? Each post illuminates her path as a fiercely independent artist committed to purpose over popularity.
Kimber’s storytelling is often informed by her personal journey — a testament to perseverance, spiritual awakening, and late-in-life expansion. After enduring years of emotional, financial, and relational hardship, her life began to thrive when she met her husband on the Big Island, married him in 2017, and began a new chapter filled with creative rebirth.
As an active member of the global indie film community, Kimber is a frequent presence on the international festival circuit. Her works have earned dozens of selections and awards, including Best Writer, Best Director, Best Sound, Best Key Cast, and multiple honors from film festivals in the United States, India, and Europe.
With each project, Kimber Leigh remains devoted to her greater calling: empowering others through storytelling, elevating voices that go unheard, and creating artistic experiences that heal. Her compass remains steady with messages of truth, compassion, and creative legacy. Through her films, books, and digital offerings, she continues to embody the light she wishes to see in the world.
She often says,
“These stories come through me, not from me. I am merely the chosen vessel.”
