U.S. Navy Seabee Veteran to Filmmaker. "Roxie" to all her friends and collaborators, is eager to work and share her stories, experience, and skills with others who love cinema's art form.
Born and raised throughout southern California, Karla, also known as "Roxie", joined the U.S. Navy straight out of high school in 2001. While in high school, she was active in the theater department and in social sports like cheerleading and the swim team. It was her journey post high school that led her around the world serving in Iceland, Italy, Japan, Guam, the Philippines, and the Middle East.
She kept her interests in film and the arts by expanding her talents, singing the National Anthem at retirement ceremonies, graduations, and change-of-command events, among others. She designed and painted t-shirt designs, murals, and hosted military balls. Upon her completion of military service, she accepted an offer to work at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Palmdale, CA where she supervised facility maintenance teams. She spearheaded a project producing new training videos for the department with the help of the Media Department, which reignited her interest in film and television.
Very soon after, Roxie registered for community college at Golden West and Orange Coast Colleges, where she completed her Associate's in Communications and Film & TV Studies with acceptance to Chapman University at Dodge College studying Creative Producing with a minor in Production Design.
While at Dodge College, Roxie produced two films, one of which, her senior thesis, she wrote and produced, "Tits Up." Her film was awarded enough grants to cover the cost of production and was recognized as the "Filmmaker of the Year for Producing" by Dodge College in partnership with Zonta Film Festival.
Roxie has been working independently in the industry for 8 years as a PA, AD, Producer, Director, Writer, and background talent. Her goals in the film and entertainment industry are to continue writing and producing female-led stories and to tell military stories that are captivating and emotionally driven. Her long-time co-collaborators, Selene Huang (Director) and Bryan Tran (Cinematographer), are talented in their own right, and she will continue to create visually compelling stories for years to come.
