Julie Mayhew is a journalist who became an actress (because she wanted more creative ways to tell stories), who became a scriptwriter (because she couldn’t find enough brilliant roles for women). She is an award-winning novelist, an award-nominated radio dramatist and has written short stories and stage plays to critical acclaim. As an alumnus of the BFI NETWORK x BAFTA Crew programme and an inaugural member of BAFTA Connect, Julie now also writes and directs for the screen.
Julie's Anglo-German romcom DON'T MENTION THE WAR features on the MUBI-backed WScripted Cannes List, she is a recipient of BFI NETWORK Early Development Funding for her feature biopic SKATING FOR LADIES, while her naturalistic sci-fi feature FOR ONLY AN HOUR was a selected project at Stowe Story Labs 2022. For TV, she is currently developing two original series: LITTLE NOTHINGS with Hazey Jane Films and OFF GRID with Studio21 (after it was a Finish Line quarter-finalist, Screencraft Screenwriting semi-finalist, and a Studio21 Drama Series finalist, showcased at Content London 2021).
As a shorts writer/director, THE GOOD FIGHT made the Funny Women longlist, took best micro short at Hastings Rocks and played in international competition at Dresdner Schmalfilmatge. Her docu-drama FOR MUM has been selected for nine festivals/screenings and counting, including Doc Heads and Shorts on Tap: Women in Revolt. Previous to that, her offbeat romcom, UNKNOWN NUMBER, premiered at The Rex, Berkhamsted ahead of Adam Kay's VICE and went on to play festivals in London, Paris and Los Angeles.
