It you could take away from your own history, either the things that depended on 'memory' or the things that depended on 'understanding' and be least deprived by the end of the take away which would you take away? As a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, artist and educator my years have taught me that our 'memories' become embodied within our personal choices, the opportunities clarified through our 'Art' and the need for change become essential. We are driven by our emotional centres. Creativity and genius have been considered bedfellows but intuition is vital to the creative thinking process. Intuition depends less on reasoning verbal comprehension than it does on 'feelings' and metaphors. Within the concept of 'film/form/function the essence of a 'thing', if you don't know exactly what you want, you will know the feeling. Growing up in the 60's undoubtedly transformed life in the West as we knew it, introducing a spirit of freedom, of hope, of happiness of change and of revolution. It is time to step outside society again as we did in the 60's and to see what is wrong with our world and to see how we'd like to change it. In my movie 'The Recital' John Keay's quote is poignant. "I went for coffee with a group of friends that I have known for over 40 years. The conversation turned bleak. They are all intelligent and realistic people but they see no hope. They see hope as a folly of our generation because we have been doing it for such a long time." (The Recital 2024) As the Executive Director of (EFSDP) Educators for Sensible Drug Policy, (2004 - present) I recognize that our global culture is dramatically changing. The social and cultural upheavals shaping the counterculture is there and thriving. Each year we witness changes in our societal structure, more so now than ever before because of technology. As EFSDP's Director I was asked to testify as an expert witness to the Open Caucus Liberal Senate, House of Commons, February 24th, 2016 in Ottawa, Canada. I testified to the Senate that a moratorium on 'cops in classrooms' must begin and law enforcement officers should not be teaching drug education. On September 13th, 2017 I was invited to the 'Standing Committee on Health (2017) re: Cannabis Act C-45 in Ottawa at the House of Commons. The topic of the panel was 'Legal Age for Possession and Cannabis Youth Use.' Educators have to play catch up in drug education. As governments move more and more towards the legalization of ALL drugs, we know unique programs will be created from school to school and district to district. They will vary from province to province, state to state, but one thing they will have in common is an adherence to drug programs that work with ideas not ideology, compassion not coercion and harm reduction not punishment. The recent 'MAiD' program in Canada has raised my concerns regarding the March 17th, 2027 'medically assisted dying program' which will be eligible for 18 year olds with mental health issues. More research and clarification about the MAiD program is imperative. I look at the MAiD program through a series of videos entitled 'The Pilgrimage' these can be viewed on 'You Tube', 'X' and FB. I asked John Keays while I was making 'The Recital' if he felt I had over stepped any boundaries in making the movie. He said, "Jude, I'd be disappointed if you didn't"!
