FLEMING - BIOGRAPHY
In 2016, Joel won the Canon Film Grant Competition championed by Gracie Otto. The prizes included winning a $10,000 Grant to write/direct a short film Georgia’s Peak starring Shuang Hu, The Family Law.
Later that year Joel formed 13th Street Films with his partner Sian Laycock. Their mission is to tell diverse stories that reflect a modern multi-cultural Australia. Together they have created and produced a series of award-winning comedy films and online content.
In 2019 they produced a series of National TVC's including a charity campaign for BuyABale to help farmers in need.
Later in 2019 Joel won the Continue Short Film Initiative and is slated to direct his first feature film from his own screenplay 'Take-Off' with Continuance Pictures in 2021.
Also in 2019 Joel directed comedy/horror short film Night Fill written by Cameron Hurry, which won several awards and played in festivals such as, Stellar Film Festival, Shriekfest, A Night of Horror, Monsterfest and many more.
Sian and Joel recently received development funding from Screen Australia to write/create a television series The C Word, which is being Executive Produced by Julie Eckersley, The Family Law, and script edited by Roger Monk, Nowhere Boys.
Joel is also co-writing Christian In The Closet a Dramedy based on actor/writer Cameron Hurry’s real-life experiences as a Gay Christian. This project was recently selected for Screen Queensland’s Creative Consultations with Benjamin Law, The Family Law.
Sian and Joel recently created & directed a new comedy series Socially Distant starring Darren Gilshenan, No Activity, STAN.
Joel currently writes comedy content for one of the world’s biggest Social Media companies.
