Portuguese multimedia artist, focused on depicting relations between time and landscape, slowing down patterns of interaction and attention
Joana Patrão (b.1992) is a Portuguese multimedia artist, whose work revolves around the notion of landscape, considering both its tensions and relational possibilities, researching natural and historical references as ways of connection with the places she works. Her practice fluctuates between video, drawing, natural materials, exploring different interactions between body, matter and time (geological, biological, technological...) as ways of attunement with different scales of perception.
With a research-based practice, Joana she was awarded a Master in Painting at School of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (2016) after completing the Fine Arts degree in the same school. As an Erasmus+ fellow she studied at the Master in Visual Culture and Contemporary Arts (2015) at Aalto University, Helsinki/Espoo, Finland, where she was selected student for the incubator Adaptations - Utö | Site, Stories and Sensory Methods, organized by HIAP, island of Utö, Finland.
She has exhibited regularly since 2014, highlighting the solo exhibitions: O sopro fóssil [The fossil breath] (2022-2023), Espaço Pontes, Fundão; A brisa do maremoto [The seaquake breeze] (2021), Appleton [BOX], Lisbon; Céu de sal, sal da terra [Sky of salt, salt of the earth] (2020), curated by Luísa Santos, Lab Box – Art Curator Grid, Lisbon; Desenho natural. A água flui na linha. [Natural drawing. Water flows in the line.](2019), Lugar do Desenho – Júlio Resende Foundation. And the collectives: Derivas e Criaturas [Drifts and creatures]- New acquisitions from the Municipal Art Collection (2023), curated by Filipa Ramos, Galeria Municipal do Porto; 15 years of MACE (2022), Cisterna de Elvas; Nature tuned to a dead channel (2022), EGEU, Lisbon. Most recently she was part of the exhibition cycle TÊTE-À-TÊTE, with the project Sombra ao sol (2023), in dialogue with works by the artist Lourdes Castro, curated by Frederico Portas and Tomás Agostinho, at Galeria Hélder Alfaiate.
By the end of 2023 she is part of an exhibition at gnration, Braga, as a result of an invitation (together with Adriana Romero) to collaborate with Davor Sanvicenti within the context of his EMAP [European Media Arts Platform] residency. This work had the support of Peneda-Gerês Natural Park and resulted in a collective exhibition called Nature makes no noise, on view until the end of 2023.
She frequently participates in artistic residencies, such as: 16mm immersive Lab at Casa do Xisto - Film and Visual Arts Residency (2023), mentored by Steve Cossman (Mono no aware, Brooklyn, NY) and Ricardo Leite (with the support of Zoom - Associação Cultural); Grão: artistic and research residence (2019), Quinta das Relvas; Bienal de Coruche (2019); Feinprobe Honigsüss 7, Wbmotion, Wittenberg, Germany.
