  • Shelia Wofford

I'm Shelia Wofford/filmmaker, director and writer from Chattanooga, TN of the short film Michael Valentine that was selected for the Jamaica International Faith Film Festival. My first time in Jamaica I was welcome and showed great hospitality. This was the most professional well organized festival that truly reached out to the Jamaican community.

Opening Night Ceremony was energetic, explosive and fun meeting volunteers, Jiff team and movie goers to screen movies ranging from documentaries, shorts, features etc. It was so great supporting other filmmakers films and cheering them on. This film festival did a lot of outreach to the community where filmmakers had an opportunity to participate in different activities each day starting with the schools. Students were able to screen films and ask questions afterwards. Filmmakers had an opportunity to speak to students about film making, writing and encourage them to follow their passion with the arts.

Later that evening I along with others were asked to judge an open mic contest with talented kids and adults from the community. What great fun we all had supporting and getting to know each other. The next day Filmmakers had an opportunity to visit the Children's Home with the team Jamaica Youth for Christ giving the kids an opportunity to screen Animation films that were submitted in the festival and we were humble to served them. It truly made me feel that I was making a difference in someone's life just by being there and the children truly enjoyed themselves.

In the evening we got to screen more wonderful films. The Awards Ceremony was on fire!!! We had a concert that truly lifted the name of Jesus Jamaican style!!! At the closing of the night the awards were presented. We were so honored to win People's Choice Award and Director's Award.

I want to extend a big thank you to the Jamaica International Faith Film Festival, Board Members, Committee, Judith Falloon-Reid and Michael, BarriVision Films, Volunteers, Jamaica Youth for Christ and other filmmakers for showing us so much love the entire run of the festival.

To any filmmakers out there you want to definitely submit your films next year to the JIFF. This was life changing for me!

Part of me wished I could have attended this wonderful festival. But they still managed to keep very good communication with me, allowed me to share a video message before my film, and I was happy to hear that my film was well received by close to 80 people in attendance. It was truly an honor to be part of this event and I really hope to be there in person one day.
