DOCK is an exciting international festival dedicated to the celebration of historical documentary cinema. The event will take place in the coastal city of Bourgas, on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast. The festival is supported by the Municipality of Bourgas and the National Film Center of Bulgaria, reflecting a shared commitment to encouraging the development and visibility of documentary filmmaking.

It is not only one of Bulgaria’s oldest towns but also one of its most culturally and socially developed cities. The DOCK festival is scheduled to take place from September 17 to September 22, 2026. The event will kick off with an official opening ceremony on September 17, setting the stage for a rich and engaging program designed to capture the attention and imagination of documentary enthusiasts.

Official Competition Program
This segment will feature a carefully curated selection of ten exceptional documentary titles, chosen through a rigorous selection process. These films will compete for top honors, showcasing innovative storytelling and profound historical insights that resonate across cultures and geographies.

Short Documentary Film Program – New in September 2026
In 2026, DOCK proudly introduces a dedicated short film program highlighting powerful and compelling historical documentaries in short format. Eligible films must have a maximum running time of 30 minutes. This section aims to spotlight emerging voices and bold storytelling approaches, offering filmmakers the opportunity to present concise yet impactful works that explore history through fresh and creative perspectives. The Short Documentary Program will provide audiences with dynamic screenings that demonstrate how meaningful stories can unfold within a shorter cinematic form.

Through engaging screenings, discussions, and networking opportunities, DOCK aims to foster dialogue among filmmakers, critics, and audiences, creating a dynamic atmosphere that encourages the exchange of ideas and perspectives. The grand prize for Official Competition Program of the DOCK festival is €1000.

The Grand Prize in the Short Documentary Competition at the DOCK Festival is honorary and does not carry a cash award. The winner will receive an official festival plaque.

Official Competition Programs

The festival presents two competitive sections:
Feature Documentary Competition (films of min 45 minutes of length)
Short Documentary Competition (films up to 30 minutes of length)

General Eligibility & Submission Rules
(Applicable to both sections unless otherwise specified)

- The film must be completed after September 1, 2024.
- The festival accepts documentary films only.
- Historical events must play a central role in the narrative.
- Films requiring special screening equipment (e.g., 3D, VR) are not accepted.
- DCP format is supported, but this must be coordinated with the festival in advance.
- Submissions are accepted exclusively via FilmFreeway. Physical submissions or submissions sent by email will not be considered.
- Films in languages other than English must include English subtitles!
- Submission deadline: June 15, 2026.
- The list of selected films will be announced by July 15, 2026.
- Selected participants will be notified by email. Results will also be published on the festival website.
- Screening copies must be provided via online platforms that allow downloading (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo, WeTransfer, Swisstransfer, etc.).
- Recommended digital format for selected films: MPEG-4 (H.264 codec), HD 1920x1080, stereo sound or DCP (to be confirmed with the festival in advance).
- All festival screenings are open to the public with free admission.
- Films containing extreme violence, pornography, or content that violates applicable domestic or international law will not be accepted.
- By submitting a film, the applicant confirms that they hold full copyright and all necessary rights for the work. The applicant agrees to allow the film to be screened during the festival and grants the festival a non-exclusive license to use excerpts, still frames, and related materials for promotional purposes.
- The festival reserves the right to use film stills, excerpts, and information about the filmmakers for promotional purposes, including the festival website and social media.
- Selected filmmakers are required to provide a press kit for their film.
