Announcement: The Second Annual Visions of Freedom: A Black Film Festival

The Second Annual Visions of Freedom: A Black Film Festival is a groundbreaking celebration of Black voices in film and storytelling. This annual event, hosted by Howard University, showcases the works of emerging Black writers and directors while fostering discussions on themes of social justice, human rights, and the Black experience.

The festival is a unique opportunity to experience powerful cinematic works, connect with creators, and explore the richness of Black stories/litetature through the lens of film.

Rules & Terms

Categories

Submissions will be accepted in the following categories from January 15, 2025 – August 28, 2025:
• Feature Films
• Short Films
• Documentaries
• Animated Films
• Experimental Films
• Family & Faith
• Health & Wellness
* Screenwriting

Eligibility
1. The competition is open to those who identify as being apart of a marginalized group (minority, women, LGBTQIA+, foreigners, Black) filmmakers or who create films exploring themes relevant to the Black experience.
2. Films must not contain profanity, nudity, or excessive violence.

Film Requirements
• Feature films: 40 minutes or longer
• Short films: Under 40 minutes
• Films not in English: Must include subtitles
• Must not have been publicly shown before January 1, 2025

Awards & Prizes

Be recognized for your creativity and storytelling with these valuable prizes:
• First Place: $5,000
• Second Place: $2,500
• Third Place: $1,000

Submission Guidelines
• Films must be submitted via Vimeo or YouTube links. Passwords for secured links must be updated regularly.
• Physical submissions are also accepted (two copies of DVDs or Blu-Rays). Mail to:
