I am Esteban Hernán Esquivel, dancer, performer. Born in the city of Mendoza, Argentina (01.11.87). I studied at the J. A. Maza University, Degree in Kinesiology and Physiotherapy.
I arrived in Buenos Aires with a scholarship at the Julio Bocca Foundation and there I started my itinerant journey in dance. In my first year I entered the Colón Theatre and started my training in Dance Theatre at the IUNA Instituto Nacional de las Artes.
At this university I was also part of the Contemporary Dance Company of the IUNA, with which we travelled inside and outside the country dancing in festivals with pieces by various national and international choreographers.
I have participated several times in festivals such as: COCOA Festival, Ciudanza, University Festival, FIBA, Formación Espectadores Festival, Rojas Danza Festival. I also took part in the "Proyecto Sur a Sur" where the company performed at the Avenida theatre in Maputo, Mozambique, Africa in partnership with the Univercidad Nacional de las Artes and the Contemporary Dance Festival FESTCOM.
My technical background is surpassed by martial arts (Karate - Do, Aikido, Kung Fu); somatic techniques (Alexander, Feldenkrais, Osteopathy); Yoga.
In my creative development I created my company Cia de Artes 4 Pies with which I started to give classes and create creative processes of research until the creation of two plays, both with premiere at the Espaço Cultural Julio Le Parc, in Mendoza-Arg.
In Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro, I assisted in the direction of the piece "ICO" of the group Fluxfabric, a dance-theater work that approaches the theme of ancestry from 4 women from different parts of the world (Brazil, Russia, Sweden, Hungary) the piece was presented in Rampa, space that co-produces the show and re-stages this year in the theatre of FUNCEB in Salvador de Bahía. Here in São Paulo, I did body assistance for the play MACACOS, which talks about racism and black genocide in Brazil, and which in the last year, collected more than 5 awards, such as Best Actor and Best Editing, which took us as winners in the Manaus/Amazonas Theatre Festival 2017.
Durante 2018 y parte de 2019 me mantuve en un constante entrenamiento e intercambio con los coreógrafos Eduardo Fukushima y Biatriz Sano, con quienes compartí entrenamientos y el montaje de la obra "Imagine".
As an actor I participated in the short film "Top 10, places to visit in Sao Paulo" directed by Akira Kamiki, work for which I received the mention of best actor at Filmworks Film Festival Sao Paulo. On the other hand, I starred in the music video "Da vida" by Marcio Lugo.
Back in Argentina I remained active dictating seminars during November and December 2019 at Espacio tiempo es arte, El ekeko cultural y Pedro Ap (Mendoza). I travelled to BsAs during January to participate in the FIBA 2020 edition. Back in Mendoza I participated in a 2-day seminar organised by EME-Terapias y movimiento and started regular practices in Teatro Independencia until, because of Covid-19, they stopped all activities.
In BsAs in January I participated in the FIBA, both opportunities as a performer of the works "Cumbia de Cámara" by Julia Gomez (2020) and "Paraíso artificial" by Luisa Ginevro (2021).
In Mendoza I created and premiered the video-dance piece "LOOP", which travelled through festivals in Argentina and Brazil; Festival de Nuevas Tendencias (mza-ar); Festival Mova-se (manaus-br); Cuerpo En Escena (Santa Fe, ar); Festival Zonas de Compensación /UNESP/ (São Paulo). In 2021 I was a guest teacher at the Contemporary Dance Ballet of the Mendoza City Council. I also premiered a performance piece of my own authorship and interpretation titled PROXIMIDADES in the Ana Frank room in the framework of Reactivate Theatre of INT (Instituto Nacional del Teatro).
2022 found me creating "Feria de Movimiento", with a group of 12 people with whom we created different performative scenes where the public could walk through the house and go discovering the installations to stop being public and be art of what was happening. In May this year I presented PROXIMIDADES within the Transt Cuerpos Performers Festival in Granada, Spain.
Since then, I have been developing my research, in this longing to share. Of sharing, learning and teaching through the encounter of the body, the relationship that turns into the movement we call dance, considering mainly, the history and reference of the other, where I mirror myself and I can see myself, relate and dialogue.
As a man of indigenous descent, an artist-dancer, I understand the significance of creating from the incorporation not only of my movements, but mainly, understanding the connection that there is in being an artist of the here and now, owner of his time, and putting on stage all the power, oppression and ancestry that our bodies breathe.
