Hasan Jamali is a freelance photographer based in Cyprus who has worked for nearly three decades in photojournalism, covering North Africa and the Persian Gulf for The Associated Press news agency from 1991 until 2018. His pictures have appeared online, on television news channels and in newspapers worldwide, including in The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post and The New York Times.
Hasan has undergone hostile environment training and is experienced in conflict photography, having covered civil unrest in Egypt and in his home country of Bahrain. His photographs of the 2011 Arab Spring in Bahrain and the harsh response the uprising provoked were published widely until a crackdown on independent journalism resulted in a government ban that has left him unable to work in Bahrain since 2016.
Hasan also has shot sports, business, politics and other assignments in countries including Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Libya as well as on military ships and offshore oil sites in the Persian Gulf. He enjoys portrait photography, capturing daily life and shedding light on humanitarian issues in the places he lives or visits, and turning his camera on nature.
