Gudmund Helmsdal is a filmmaker, writer, and director based in the Faroe Islands. He holds a master’s degree in Film Arts from Copenhagen University and draws on Faroese culture, mythology, and landscape across his work.
He interned at Final Cut for Real in Copenhagen, spent four years working in independent cinema in Australia, and has worked as crew on international productions shot in the Faroe Islands, including No Time to Die, Peter Pan and Wendy, and Trom.
His short film Brother Troll (2021) screened at 162 festivals in 42 countries, winning 123 awards. He has been active internationally, with market participation at the Marché du Film in Cannes, EFM Berlin, FilmART Hong Kong, Nordisk Panorama, the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund, Nordic Film Market in Göteborg, and Waves Mumbai.
Current projects include the horror feature Whistler and the documentary Syng: The Song in the Body, both with Outlier Projects — Syng partially funded by DFI through NordDok 3 — and the survival war film A Dangerous Voyage with Gró Studios.
