Gabriel Reid is a New Zealand writer, director, producer and educator whose work spans film, television and theatre. Beginning his career as a child actor, he has built a multifaceted career across performance, creative production and direction. His short films have screened internationally and earned recognition from Tropfest, Promax and the New Zealand Writers Guild. His recent proof-of-concept short, 'Impossible', was post-produced at Park Road Post and awarded Gold by the New Zealand Cinematographers Society.
Reid has worked across all aspects of production, from high-end television promos for TVNZ and MediaWorks to assistant direction on feature films including 'Kiwi Christmas' and 'Prince Caspian'. He was instrumental in establishing what is now New Zealand Opera, serving in capacities from assistant director to marketing officer, collaborating with artists including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Sir Donald McIntyre.
His theatre work has received critical acclaim, with 'Amadeus' praised by The New Zealand Herald for “scrupulous care and refreshing confidence,” and 'The Crucible' described by Strip Magazine as “craft and precision that could inspire even more experienced directors".
Reid holds a PhD in Film, Television, and Media Studies, with research conducted at Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic, Blue Sky Studios, Animal Logic and Weta Digital. His MA thesis was based on research conducted at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal National Theatre and Renaissance Films. He holds a Post-Graduate diploma in Teaching.
Reid has lectured in Film History and New Zealand Cinema at Unitec Institute of Technology and taught English at Auckland Grammar School. He served on the board of the Directors and Editors Guild (DEGANZ) for ten years and on the board of Film Auckland (FAI) for five years.
Reid is actively developing a slate of projects. His work continues to span various genres, exploring themes of human complexity, reinvention and the transformative power of storytelling.
