1. Object
The Municipality of Genoa supports/encourages the interest of the city and the citizens towards dance, in its multiple expressions, and with renewed attention to creativity, to the languages, and to the experimentations proper of the contemporary world.
FuoriFormato – International Festival of contemporary dance and video dance is an international festival dedicated to Contemporary Dance shows, performances, and screen dance films. It is organized by Comune di Genova (Genoa Municipality), curated by Compagnia Teatro Akropolis, Associazione culturale RETE Danzacontempoligure and Associazione culturale Augenblick, in collaboration with Società per Cornigliano Spa. The festival will take place in Genoa will take place from Tuesday the 25th to Friday the 28th of June 2024, in various locations of the city: the city center, Villa Durazzo Bombrini, Teatro Akropolis and a cinema hall of the Circuito Cinema Genova.

2. Mission
The goal of this call is to select meaningful dance films to be screened during Stories We Dance, the video dance section of FuoriFormato 2024. Stories We Dance is curated by Augenblick Associazione culturale and focuses on the deep connection and wide interplay between dance, audiovisual languages, and dramaturgy. Stories We Dance promotes dance films that develop a movement-based storytelling, experimentation, and research toward new technologies, without any constraints on genre or format.
The selected films will be screened in Genoa at Villa Durazzo Bombrini and in a cinema hall of the Circuito Cinema Genova (yet to be definfed).
3. Eligible Participants
Stories We Dance accepts the submission of short films under 25 min. (opening titles and final credits included), produced worldwide after the 1st of January 2023, without any theme limitation.
4. Conditions of Participation
The 2 sections open to submissions are:
Stories We Dance - International video dance: for films produced outside of Italy;
Stories We Dance - Laboratorio Italia: for films produced or co-produced in Italy.
The Jury holds the right to select the most deserving Italian films (Laboratorio Italia) to be screened within the International video dance section.
Films could be submitted without any fee via the platform FilmFreeway (https://filmfreeway.com/FuoriFormatoStoriesWeDance), no later than 23.59 (11.59 PM) of the 18th of May 2024, Central European Time. Please provide a link to the film and the password, if requested. Films with dialogues that are not in Italian or English must have English or Italian subtitles.
The same artist (as a single director of the film, or collective) can submit no more than two works.
The submission of a film implies that the artist is in full possession of the rights to screen it (these rights concern concept, choreography, script, music, images and any other form of authorship). Organizers and curators are not responsible for false or incorrect information.
By accepting the rules of the open call, selected artists authorize:
to be included in Comune di Genova, FuoriFormato and Augenblick Associazione culturale archives;
a single screening of their film in Genoa, during FuoriFormato (25-28 June 2024);
that an extract of their work (up to a maximum of 30 seconds) may be used by Comune di Genova and Associazione culturale Augenblick with the aim of promoting FuoriFormato, in any context and language, by traditional and new
media platforms, prior to and following the closing night of the festival. Please note that the video or photographic materials provided will be subject to current regulations on data processing and privacy.

5. Grounds for Exclusion
No films that had been sent to or selected in the previous editions of FuoriFormato will be accepted.
Stories We Dance will not accept recorded live performances and music video clips.
6. Selection procedures
The selection process will be made by Associazione culturale Augenblick which will analyze every work using the following criteria:
choreographic research
narrative creativity
audiovisual quality
7. Official Selection - Things to do
The authors of the selected films will be privately notified on FilmFreeway and by e-mail. They must send the following files and link to storieswedance@gmail.com, by the 25th of May 2024:
a downloadable DCP of the film, if available, not exceeding 60 GB;
a .mov or .mp4 HD file of the film, 2340x2160 or 1920x1080, H.264 codec;
2 stills taken from their film in .jpg format at a resolution of 300dpi;
link to the online trailer of their film.
For non-Italian films containing dialogues, a dialogue list in English will be required as a .doc, .docx or .pdf file. These dialogues will then be translated and subtitled in Italian by Associazione culturale Augenblick.
8. Awards
The official announcement of Stories We Dance finalists will be reported on FuoriFormato website(https://www.fuoriformatofestival.it) and on Genova Creativa - Comune di Genova website (https://www.genovacreativa.it) on the 1st of June 2024.
The Stories We Dance - International Video dance selected films will be presented to the Jury, composed of dance critics, performers, filmmakers and audiovisual artists, writers and media professionals. The Jury will award a prize (500 €) to the Best Film in Stories We Dance section during the screening night, after the projection. Honorable or special mentions may also be awarded.
The films selected for the Stories We Dance - Laboratorio Italia will be assigned to the Young Jury, composed of students under 30 years of age, selected through a tender. The Young Jury members will be coordinated by experienced professionals in dance, performance, filmmaking, and audio-visual art. The Young Jury will assign the best film award in the Laboratorio Italia category (250€).
The members of the Jury will be announced after the closing date of the open call. During the screening, the audience will be invited to vote for a film for the Audience Award.
9. Clarification
The Municipality of Genoa and the organizers reserve the right to modify, interrupt, postpone, or cancel the selection procedure and festival and no request for compensation or reimbursement will be accepted.
The participation in the call does not assure the selection. Statements that do not correspond to the truth, the formation and/or use of false documents, the presentation of a document containing data that no longer correspond to the truth will result in the forfeiture of any benefits provided as well as the application of the cases envisaged by art. 76 Presidential Decree No. 445/2000.
The organizers of the Festival, in agreement with each other, also reserve the right to suspend, interrupt, cancel or postpone the festival, or to redefine, suspend, cancel the above prizes for reasons beyond its control. The interested parties can not make any claim for compensation or indemnity against the Municipality and the other organizers.
