Fronterror Film Fest

Laredo Film Society (LFS) is a non-profit organization that exists to making cinema accessible in South Texas through exhibition, education, and production. 🎥 Since 2018, we've worked to cultivate a lively film culture by connecting audiences with indie cinema while creating opportunities for emerging border filmmakers to learn, create, and share their work. 🩸FRONTERROR FILM FEST is the next evolution of that mission!🩸

FRONTERROR grew out of LFS’s annual October horror short film challenge and showcase. Each year, filmmakers were invited to create an original horror short inspired by a specific horror theme, and each year, we saw more filmmakers, stronger work, and a growing appetite for regionally made horror.

So, naturally, we evolved our annual showcase into an annual festival in Laredo, Texas, where filmmakers from across the Texas-Mexico borderlands can connect, premiere new work, and continue pushing the genre in cool new directions.

THIS YEAR'S THEME: SLASHER ERAS - *3 CATEGORIES!*
🩸THE 70s:
- The slasher is kind of new in the 70s, with lots of giallo influence, a mystery element, voyeurism, a "stranger" as a killer, all with the spirit of experimental art films.
- Draw inspiration from: Black Christmas, Deep Red, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Torso, Halloween, and Alice, Sweet Alice.

🩸 THE 80s:
- This decade is the peak of slasher franchises. The camp and gore are dialed up, the killers are elevated to ICONS, almost mythological god-like beings, and it’s not fringe indie film anymore; it’s popcorn movie.
- Get inspired by: the Friday the 13th franchise, My Bloody Valentine, Burning, Nightmare on Elm Street, The House on Sorority Row, Halloween II, and Prom Night.

🩸THE 90s:
- There's an aesthetic choice in setting slasher film of this decade in high school. You also care about more about the characters more in the 90s than in the 80s; things are more personal than mythological, partly because the killer is someone the characters know. There’s also so much more importance placed on the interactions between the characters. The stories and arcs are rooted in interpersonal connectedness. Slasher horror also became much more self-aware and self-reflective.
- For inspo, watch: the Scream franchise, the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise, Urban Legend, Final Destination, Office Killer, and The Faculty.

WHY SLASHERS? 🤔
Slashers have fallen out of popularity for several good reasons: outdated tropes and stereotypes, racism, transphobia, and misogyny. So yeah, it's time to reinvent this horror genre with more subversive storytelling -- but also fulfilling the promise of the premise! Because there's a lot to love about slashers that's in line with the values of LFS, like inventive practical special effects, thrilling cinematography, and most especially, indie/low-budget/DIY filmmaking. It's time for a more modern, inclusive, border-based crop of filmmakers to put their own spin on the slasher genre. 🫶🏽

FRONTERROR nació del reto y muestra anual de cortometrajes de terror de LFS, celebrados cada octubre. Cada año, se invitaba a cineastas a crear un cortometraje de terror original inspirado en un tema específico, y cada año veíamos más cineastas, cortrometrajes de mayor calidad y un creciente interés por el terror regional.

Así que, claro, transformamos nuestra muestra anual en un festival anual en Laredo, Texas, donde cineastas de toda la zona fronteriza entre Texas y México pueden conectar, estrenar nuevos cortometrajes y seguir impulsando el género hacia nuevas e interesantes direcciones.

TEMA DE ESTE AÑO: ERAS DEL SLASHER - ¡3 CATEGORÍAS!
🩸 LOS AÑOS 70:
- El slasher era todavía un subgénero relativamente nuevo en los años 70, con una fuerte influencia del giallo, elementos de misterio, voyeurismo y un asesino desconocido, todo con el espíritu del cine experimental.

🩸 LOS AÑOS 80:
- Esta década es la cúspide de las franquicias slasher. El tono camp y el gore se intensificaron, los asesinos se convirtieron en ÍCONOS, seres casi mitológicos, y ya no se trataba de cine independiente marginal; era cine palomitero.
- Inspírate en: la franquicia de Friday the 13th, My Bloody Valentine, Burning, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The House on Sorority Row, Halloween II y Prom Night.

🩸LOS AÑOS 90:
- Hay una elección estética en ambientar las películas de terror slasher de esta década en la prepa. Aparte, en los 90, los personajes cobran mucha más importancia que en los 80; las cosas son más personales que mitológicas, en parte porque el asesino es alguien que los personajes conocen. También se le da mucha más importancia a las interacciones entre los personajes. Las historias y los arcos argumentales se basan en la conexión interpersonal. El terror slasher también se volvió mucho más autoconsciente y autorreflexivo.

¿POR QUÉ EL 'SLASHER'? 🤔
Las películas de terror slasher han perdido popularidad por varias buenas razones: tropos y estereotipos anticuados, racismo, transfobia y misoginia. Sí, es hora de reinventar este género de terror con narrativas más subversivas, ¡pero también cumpliendo la promesa de la premisa! Porque hay mucho que amar de las películas slasher que coinciden con los valores de LFS, como los ingeniosos efectos especiales prácticos, la cinematografía emocionante y, sobre todo, el cine independiente/de bajo presupuesto/DIY. Es hora de que una generación de cineastas más moderna, inclusiva y fronteriza le dé su propio toque al género slasher. 🫶🏽
