Flicks Fiesta is a student-organized short film festival initiated by degree students of KDU Penang University College in 2015. It started as a general idea introduced by the Corporate Event Planning module tutor, Ms. Sarata Balaya. Since then, Flicks Fiesta has been organized by students, for students.

The initial idea of Flicks Fiesta was to provide a platform for students to showcase their final year productions. It was aimed at young filmmakers to showcase their independent productions, giving them new exposures, and to experience a sense of accomplishment. With this in mind, this opportunity was opened to young filmmakers all over George Town, Penang.

Since then, this short film festival grew from a local event to a national festival. In 2016, Flicks Fiesta received submissions from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), UCSI University College, INTI International College, University Malaysia Sabah (UNIMAS) and many other institutions all over Malaysia. In the same year, a new award - Yasmin Ahmad Award - was introduced to acknowledge young creative filmmakers with multi-cultured submissions.

This year, we added a new category: Photography. We decided to do this because we believe that photography is a great tool for self-expression. Being able to express one's self through a photo is very powerful. Even though anyone could do it, it still takes skills and talent to be able to tell a story through a still picture. We want to recognise these young creatives not just in filmmaking, but as well as in photography.

Rules & Terms

The aim for Flicks Fiesta 2018 is to provide a platform for young creative individuals to showcase their videography and photography work. This year the film festival is open for submissions in two categories that is the Videography and Photography categories.

The following CONDITIONS apply to each entry:
• No registration fee is required.
• Each participant is allowed to participate in both categories (photography and videography), with
more than 1 entry.
• Participants should be enrolled in a university/college or is an alumni of any academic
institution; between the ages of 18-35 years old.
• Entries must be submitted in English and must be the sole work of the entrant. However, non-
English films should include English subtitles.
• Please fill in the registration form before submitting your work(s) that is available on the website.
All information regarding participants must be complete and accurate. Any form of false information will result in an immediate elimination.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES (FILM AND PHOTOGRAPHY)
• The Short Film / Documentary / PSA / Experimental Video and Music Video should be in AVI/ MPEG/MP4/MOV format.
• The photographs should be in JPEG/PNG format.
• The photo submissions should come with a title and description.
• Photographs can be taken on a smart phone or using a DSLR camera. *We are not responsible for the loss of quality in your photo submission.
• All works should be submitted through WeTransfer to our e-mail flicksfiesta@gmail.com.
• The theme for film/photo submission for Flicks Fiesta 2018 is “Celebrating Talents, Celebrating Lives”.
• Participants who fail to comply with these terms will be disqualified.
• Juries’ decisions are final and conclusive.
• By entering this contest, participants have agreed to uphold every rule and regulation as stated above.
• Participants should hold the copyrights of the film/photo and credit whatever sources of work in the film/photo itself.
