Filmare la storia (“Telling Contemporary History through Film”) is a competition for audiovisual works focusing on 20th-century and contemporary history, organized by the National Cinematic Archive of the Italian Resistance (ANCR, Turin).
The contest promotes the use of film and video as educational and civic tools to explore, interpret, and transmit historical memory through visual storytelling.

The competition includes three main sections:

Videomakers (for independent and professional filmmakers – registration via FilmFreeway)

Schools (for all school levels – registration via Google form)

Writing for Filming History / Luce for Education (screenwriting projects by Italian high school students)

Deadlines:

Videomaker Competition → February 28, 2026

Schools Competition → April 4, 2026

Location and dates: Turin, May 27–29, 2026 (provisional dates).

Eligible works include fiction films, documentaries, and animations produced from January 2023 to January 2026, in any language, with Italian or English subtitles.

Main Awards:
“Paolo Gobetti” – Filming History Award (for short film, documentary and feature films)
“April 25” Award – ANPI and Resistance Associations of Piedmont (for short film, documentary and feature films)
“City of Turin” Award – ITER (only for school)
Youth Jury Award
National Short Film Center Award (only for short film made in Italy)

Participation is free of charge.

Selected works will be promoted throughout the year in collaboration with national and international partners.

ilmare la storia “Paolo Gobetti” Award
The award is dedicated to Paolo Gobetti, partisan, film critic, and founder of the National Cinematic Archive of the Italian Resistance.
It includes several categories according to the participants:

works produced by pupils and teachers of nursery and primary schools

works produced by students and teachers of lower secondary schools

works produced by students and teachers of upper secondary schools

short films made by videomakers

feature films made by videomakers
The winners of each category will receive a €400 cash prize, offered by the Film Commission Torino Piemonte.

Filmare la storia “Youth Jury” Award
This award is given to a work produced by an upper secondary school.
The jury is composed of young people aged between 18 and 23.

Filmare la storia “Best Resistence Film"” Award
Promoted by the National Association of Italian Partisans (ANPI).
It is assigned to the best films (from schools and/or videomakers) dealing with the themes of the Resistance among those participating in the competition.
The winning film will receive a €250 cash prize.

Filmare la storia “City of Turin” Award
This award is given to the best work among those produced by primary and secondary schools located in Turin and its metropolitan area, in collaboration with the City of Turin – ITER (Istituzione Torinese per una Educazione Responsabile).
The prize consists of an educational kit for audio-video recording.

National Short Film Center Award – Filmare la storia Competition
The National Short Film Center (founded in 2007 as the main project of A.I.A.C.E. Nazionale) operates nationally and internationally, following the model of European agencies dedicated to the promotion of short films. It works to strengthen the connections between Italian filmmakers and the international short film community.
The Center will award a prize consisting in the selection of one Italian short film from the Videomaker section to be included in one of its international screening programs.

Best Animated Short Film Award
This prize is given to an animated documentary short film addressing the themes of the competition. The award is assigned by a jury appointed in collaboration with the Animation Program of the National Film School – Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (Piedmont branch).

“Writing for Filming History / Luce for Education” Award – Archivio Storico Luce – Cinecittà Spa
This award is assigned to a screenplay or writing project for an audiovisual work that includes, in its realization phase, up to five minutes of footage from the Archivio Storico Luce – Cinecittà Spa.

By submitting an entry, the participant declares to be the rightful owner of the work and to have used in it only photographs and/or audiovisual and musical materials not subject to copyright or for which they hold full rights. The participant also agrees to the terms of this regulation and authorizes the screening of the work during the events related to the competition and, upon prior notice to the director, within dissemination initiatives connected to it (screenings held in places and on dates other than those of the competition).

Furthermore, the participant authorizes the National Cinematic Archive of the Italian Resistance to keep a copy of the work and to use it for consultation, educational, and research purposes, also in different venues and contexts, excluding any commercial use and ensuring the protection of the authors’ and producers’ rights.

The same work may participate in only one edition of the competition.
The same school and each videomaker may submit multiple works.

The award ceremony and screening of the winning works will take place during a dedicated event held in Turin between late May and early June 2026.

No screening fees will be paid for films selected in competition.

Participation in the competition implies full acceptance of these regulations.
For any dispute, the Court of Turin shall have jurisdiction.
