Film My Design (FMD) is the first and only design-film festival in the MENA region, held bi-annually in Cairo, Egypt. Leveraging Egypt’s strong, long-standing connection to the film world, FMD’s mission centers on telling inspiring, engaging, and thought-provoking stories on design, architecture and city life using film; the most universal language of visual storytelling.

FMD has held a highly successful 2nd edition from the 27th to the 30th of January 2022. This took place in the heart of downtown Cairo at Zawya Cinema. FMD 2022 hosted over 30 local and international film screenings and conversations on design, architecture and urban life as well as an installation titled “Fragments in Transition,” co-curated and designed by Studio Paradigm. Bridging the worlds of design and film, the FMD 2022 festival brought together creative professionals and enthusiasts from Egypt and beyond.

Building on this success, FMD is preparing for its 3rd edition film festival, scheduled for October 3-12, 2024. This edition’s 10-consecutive-day program will host film screenings, talks, panel discussions, masterclasses, workshops, an exhibition, immersive experiences, and city tours. The festival aims to cross-pollinate art and design with filmography, creating a uniquely innovative way of expanding society’s exposure to the local, regional and international creative communities.

Film submissions are re-opened for Film My Design’s 3rd edition. We're seeking documentary, fiction, animation, and experimental films of all lengths produced between 2023 and 2024 for our upcoming festival. Films submitted to this open call can respond closely or loosely to any of the following thematic focuses.

- "Design": Films that delve into the essence of human-centered design, showcasing innovative and sustainable design solutions that shape a better future. Your film could explore how designers navigate challenges to create solutions harmonizing with the natural world, highlighting resilience and ingenuity on the path to sustainability.
- "Architecture": Films that examine how architecture influences daily life and reflects societal culture. Your film could share stories behind structures and architects envisioning cities as vibrant, inclusive spaces where humanity thrives.
- "City Life": Films that explore the bustling streets, diverse communities, and dynamic cultures defining urban life. Through intimate portraits and immersive storytelling, your film could reveal the complexity of the human experience in urban environments.
- "Filmmaking": Films that delve into the behind-the-scenes of cinematic masterpieces, revealing the artistry and craftsmanship bringing stories to life on the silver screen.

فيلم ماي ديزاين هو مهرجان سينمائي للتصميم يُعد الأول والوحيد في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا، ويقام مرة كل سنتين في القاهرة، مصر. يُركَِز المهرجان على سرد قصص ملهمة وجذابة ومحفزة للتفكير عن التصميم والعمارة وحياة المدينة باستخدام الأفلام: اللغة الأكثر تأثيرًا في العالم في صناعة فنون السرد البصري.

عُقدت النسخة الثانية من مهرجان فيلم ماي ديزاين في الفترة من 27 إلى 30 يناير عام 2022. أُقيم المهرجان في قلب مدينة القاهرة في سينما زاوية، حيث نُظِم أكثر من 30 عرضًا سينمائيًا محليًا ودوليًا بالإضافة إلى نقاشات حول التصميم والعمارة والحياة الحضرية، ومعرض فني بعنوان "شظايا في مرحلة انتقالية" الذي شارك في تنسيقه وتصميمه ستوديو باراديم. من خلال سعيه لسد الفجوة بين عالمي التصميم والسينما، جمع المهرجان بين المبدعين ذوي الخبرات والهواة من مصر وخارجها.

اعتمادًا على نجاح تلك النسخة، تُعقد الدورة الثالثة من فيلم ماي ديزاين في الفترة من 3 إلى 12 أكتوبر 2024. على مدار عشرة أيام، سيشمل برنامج المهرجان سلسلة من عروض الأفلام والمحاضرات وحلقات النقاش ولقاءات مع الخبراء والجولات، نهدف من خلالهم إلى المزج بين الفن والتصميم وصناعة الأفلام، مما يخلق طريقة مبتكرة وفريدة من نوعها لتوسيع نطاق تعرُّض الجمهور للإبداع المحلي والإقليمي والدولي.

تقديم الأفلام للنسخة الثالثة من المهرجان مفتوح مرة أخرى. نبحث عن أفلام وثائقية وروائية وتحريك وتجريبية بمختلف المدد الزمنية، على أن تكون أُنتِجت بين عامي 2023 و2024. يُمكِن للأفلام المُقدَمة لهذه الدعوة أن تستجيب بشكل مباشر أو شاعري لأيًا من المواضيع التالية التي يُركِّز عليها المهرجان:
– التصميم: أفلام تتعمق في جوهر التصميم الإنساني، وتعرض حلولًا مبتكرة ومستدامة تُساهم في تشكيل مستقبل أفضل. يُمكن أن تستكشف أفلامكم كيف يتغلب المصممون على التحديات المتعلقة بإيجاد حلول تنسجم مع العالم الطبيعي، وتسلط الضوء على المرونة والإبداع على الطريق نحو الاستدامة.
– العمارة: أفلام تدرس كيفية تأثير التصميم المعماري على الحياة اليومية وتعكس الثقافة المجتمعية. يُمكن أن تشارك أفلامكم قصصًا وراء المباني والمعماريين الذين يتصورون المدن كمساحات نابضة بالحياة تزدهر فيها البشرية.
– حياة المدينة: أفلام تستكشف الشوارع الصاخبة والمجتمعات المتنوعة والثقافات الديناميكية التي تحدد الحياة الحضرية. من خلال التصوير الحميمي والسرد القصصي، يُمكِن لأفلامكم أن تستكشف مدى تعقيد التجربة الإنسانية في البيئات الحضرية.
صناعة الأفلام: أفلام تتعمق في كواليس روائع السينما، وتكشف عن البراعة الفنية والحرفية التي تبث الحياة في القصص على الشاشة – الكبيرة.

Rules & Terms

>> Eligibility: (Arabic Translation Below)

- Filmmakers residing in Egypt and the MENASA region (Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia).
- One film submission per director.
- Only 2023 and 2024 productions.
- Films not previously aired on TV, or exhibited online.
- We accept short, medium and long lengths films. Short films should be of a minimum of 4 minutes.
- We accept films of all types including documentary, fiction, animation, and experimental films.
- We welcome animated films of all styles and techniques including stop motion, 2D animation, 3D animation, mixed media, and experimental techniques. While other films should align with our thematic focuses, we encourage animation films that showcase exceptional storytelling and filmmaking regardless of their themes.
- Incomplete films (in progress) are accepted for judging, but only one version of the screener is allowed. If your film is selected, a final version will be required two months before the festival.

- Alignment with Theme: Your film should resonate with the festival's thematic focus, exploring ideas related to design, architecture, city life, or filmmaking.
- Creativity and Originality: We're looking for fresh, innovative approaches that showcase your unique perspective and storytelling style.
- Technical Proficiency: Your film's technical execution, including cinematography, editing, and sound design, should be polished and professional.
- Engaging Narrative: Captivate us with a compelling story and well-developed characters that draw us into your world.
- Emotional Impact: Make us feel something! We want to be moved, inspired, or challenged by the emotions your film evokes.
- Relevance and Social Commentary: Connect your film to contemporary issues and themes that resonate with audiences today.
- Overall Impression: Leave us with a lasting impression that demonstrates your talent and creativity as a filmmaker.

- هذه الدعوة لصناع الأفلام من مصر ومنطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا وجنوب آسيا.
- يُمكن لكل مخرج/ة تقديم فيلم واحد فقط.
- نستقبل الأفلام المنتجة في 2023 و2024 فقط.
- نستقبل الأفلام التي لم تُعرَض من قبل على شاشات التلفزيون أو عبر الإنترنت.
- نستقبل الأفلام القصيرة والمتوسطة والطويلة. يجب ألا تقل مدة الأفلام القصيرة عن 4 دقائق.
- نستقبل الأفلام بجميع أنواعها بما في ذلك الأفلام الوثائقية والروائية وأفلام التحريك والتجريبية.
- نستقبل أفلام التحريك من جميع الأساليب والتقنيات بما في ذلك الستوب موشن والرسم ثنائي وثلاثي الأبعاد وباقي التقنيات. بينما يجب على الأفلام الأخرى أن تتوافق مع المواضيع التي يُركِّز عليها المهرجان، نُشجع جميع أفلام التحريك التي تُقدِّم قصصًا مميزة وحرفة استثنائية بغض النظر عن موضوعاتها.
- نستقبل الأفلام غير المكتملة (قيد التنفيذ)، ولكن يُسمح بإرسال نسخة واحدة فقط للاختيار. إذا تحدد مشاركة الفيلم، يتوجب إرسال النسخة النهائية قبل شهرين من موعد المهرجان.

- الكفاءة الفنية: يجب أن يكون التنفيذ الفني لفيلمك، بما في ذلك التصوير السينمائي والمونتاج وتصميم الصوت، مصقولًا واحترافيًا.
- السرد الجذاب: يجب أن يبهرنا الفيلم بقصة مُقنِعة وشخصيات متطورة تجذبنا إلى عالمه.
-الإلهام العاطفي: يجب أن يجعلنا الفيلم نشعر بشيء! نريد أن نتأثر أو نُلهم أو نشعر بتحدي تجاه ما يثيره الفيلم.
