I am a filmmaker and researcher. Growing up in India I have been fascinated by the world of filmmaking since childhood. But I first started getting hands on filmmaking experiences during my undergraduate days. I got my masters in Journalism and Mass Communication form the University of Calcutta, India and moved to the United stated for my doctoral studies. After receiving my doctoral degree (2021) from the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (UMN-TC), I joined the Department of Communication and Film at the University of Memphis (UofM) as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Film and Video in 2021.
My work brings production-based case studies to explore the intersection of communication theory and practice. I have directed, edited, and produced four documentary films, eight short videos, and one short documentary film (in post-production). My films and videos have been screened at festivals such as the 2024 University Film and Video Association Conference, 2023 Chicago South Asian Film Festival, 2023 Lift-Off Global Network Film Sessions, 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), Climate Justice Online Music Festival, and received awards such as 2024 North America Bengali Conference Indie Film Festival Best Cinematography and Best Screenplay, 2023 Hub City Film Festival Best Documentary, Judges Choice Award, 2021 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Visual Communication Award.
As a film and media researcher, I have conducted field work in the Pacific Northwest, Minnesota, Illinois, India, and Bangladesh. My research and productions examine social movements involving multicultural and multiracial ethnic groups and minorities through community-based co-productions. Currently, I am working on the production of a short biographical documentary film. I also taught Video Production at the University of Minnesota and Critical Media Studies at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota.
