When words fail all these thoughts and feelings and senses, this internal monologue that runs and rages finds the body its tunnel to spill through, a voice to cry out with.
Liz Mulkey, living in Maine, is a Los Angeles born and raised movement artist, actor, film maker and movement teacher. Her work's theme is mental health. Her performances are visceral and theatrical, with heavy use of breath, and often set against the natural world. Liz investigates how stories and roles become physicalized in the body, acting as imprisonment or catalysts to the spirit affecting how we navigate our varying identities. She uses her background in acting to bring theatrics to her work and her mindbody research to provide energetic feedback through the choreography. Liz presents her original choreography as live performance, site specific, film, and photography. Her film Blue won the Italian Absurd Film Fest screened her film Yellow at Golden College West Gallery California, Night Life at En Route Maine, and twice at 92nd st Y Mobile Dance Film Festival. In Los Angeles, Liz presented work at Platform Culver City, The Stockstill Space, Strub Theatre Loyola Marymount University, High Voltage at Electric Lodge, and a Pop-up Show at Muscle Beach Venice. Nationally, she presented work at the Tank Theater (NYC), Movement Research (NYC),Green Street Studios and NACHMO (Boston, MA), and Engine Arts and The Living Room (Portland, ME). She’s performed for Alexandra Pirici on the Highline Arts NYC, Brooklyn Prospect Park sculptor Fitzhugh Karol, Highways Performance Space, and Dance Camera West. “We’re in a contemporary dance time, as opposed to modern or postmodern. Contemporary dance is embodied thinking, not just solving problems and finding answers.” meg wolfe
