FESTIVAL UPDATE
After fourteen years of gathering around films, conversations, and creative community, the Duluth Superior Film Festival has reached its final season. The 2024 festival closes a chapter that was built with heart from the beginning, shaped by a belief that cinema can bring people together in ways that feel meaningful, unexpected, and deeply human.
The festival was never meant to be only a lineup of screenings. It grew from an intention to welcome filmmakers with sincerity, to curate work with artistic purpose, and to create moments where audiences and artists could meet one another with openness. Over time that intention became the festival's identity. Filmmakers traveled great distances to share their work here. Local audiences returned year after year because something about this gathering felt personal, grounded, and alive.

Closing the festival is not a sign that its purpose has faded. It reflects a shift in organizational direction and capacity. Even so, this moment deserves clarity and gratitude rather than letting the festival drift quietly into the past. To everyone who contributed to its life, including the programmers who cared deeply about their selections, the artists who trusted us with their work, the volunteers who sustained each season, and the community that supported these gatherings, thank you. You helped create something special.

The Duluth Superior Film Festival ends with respect for its past and sincere appreciation for everyone who shaped its fourteen year story.

MISSION AND LEGACY
The Duluth Superior Film Festival began with a generous idea. The founders believed that film could bridge distance, soften boundaries, and invite people into experiences they might not otherwise encounter. The festival was created for a region that deserved cinematic access, cultural connection, and the kind of shared dialogue that continues long after the screen goes dark.

At its core, the festival was an act of hospitality. It welcomed filmmakers into a community where their work would be met with curiosity and care. It offered audiences thoughtful programming, from traditional narratives to bold experimental pieces, always guided by the belief that diverse viewpoints enrich the cultural life of a place. It nurtured friendships, long conversations, and moments of discovery that could only happen when people gather to watch something new together.

The lasting impact of the festival lives in the memories created along the way. It lives in the conversations in the lobby, in the filmmakers who felt seen and supported, in the audiences who were moved in ways they did not expect, and in the community that came to value film as both art and connection.

Although the festival has concluded, its mission continues through the people who believed in it. Thank you for helping shape a legacy rooted in intention, openness, and the shared experience of storytelling.

Throughout its fourteen year history, the Duluth Superior Film Festival offered a small number of non cash awards each season. These recognitions were never formulaic or fixed. Instead, they were shaped by the films that emerged each year and the artistic significance they carried.

The festival valued work that moved audiences, challenged expectations, expanded the language of film, or held a unique place within its genre or field. Awards were given with care, reflecting the heart of the festival: to see filmmakers fully, to honor intention, and to celebrate creative voices that left an impression on the community.

Although the festival is no longer active, the spirit behind these awards remains part of its legacy. They were always meant as gestures of appreciation, thoughtful acknowledgments of the artistry and commitment behind the work shared here.

The Duluth Superior Film Festival is no longer accepting submissions. What follows is offered as a reflection of the values that shaped the festival from the beginning.

The festival held to simple principles that guided how people treated one another. Respect, honesty, kindness, and a commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment were foundational. These values shaped interactions among artists, audiences, volunteers, and guests and they informed every part of the festival experience.

The intention was always to gather people around film in a way that felt welcoming and grounded in decency. The festival believed that creativity thrives when people feel safe, respected, and free of exploitation or harm. That belief remained central throughout its fourteen year history.

These values continue to define how we remember the festival and the community that supported it.

Adam, Lindsey, and the entire team had SO much work on their hands with this festival, considering they were helping other festivals under the North Star Story Summit operate under what seemed like a particularly bonkers year. I really appreciate the care and consideration that went into programming All-American Ruins into their shorts block "Ruins and Reveries," and I would highly recommend this festival for anyone looking to experience alternative indie festivals that have such a slick team behind it. Thank you again!

My second year at DSFF was even better than my first. This is a festival that really cares about the filmmakers and goes out of the way to make everyone feel welcome and valued. Adam S and his team go above and beyond for a quality presentation of all works. I also appreciate the Q&A after every screening. I look forward to being a part of future festivals. Bravo everyone!

The festival curated excellent shorts, including non-traditional work, and communication was smooth and personal. I was sorry to not have been able to attend this year, esp since Duluth is a favorite city in MN. Thank you!
