10 YEARS OF EXPERTISE

Angeles Documentary is a biannual, highly curated film festival established in 2016, dedicated exclusively to documentary filmmaking.

The festival presents screenings across Los Angeles, with recent venues in Larchmont, Highland Park, Echo Park, and Culver City.

We are a filmmaker-oriented event, with screenings open to the public. Over the years, we have built a strong and consistent platform where documentary filmmakersโ€™ work is reviewed with care and interest.

Our competition is international. In recent years, we have received entries from 87 countries, with each call for entries averaging submissions from over 40 countries.
That said, we are not a high-volume festival. Our curation is sharp and intentional.

Our audience is composed of both filmmakers and documentary-focused viewers, creating an environment of informed engagement rather than passive viewing.

๐ŸŒ

PROGRAMMING WITHOUT COMPROMISE

We actively support bold and challenging work.

We have screened films that faced resistance in mainstream or sponsored festivals, ensuring filmmakers reach an audience in a professional setting.

Most recent example: in January 2026, we screened the documentary "Youโ€™re No Indian", directed by Ryan Flynn, which had received a cease-and-desist letter from the Pechanga tribe.
We hosted a full live Q&A with the director, attended by Kiowa Gordon, known for his role as Jim Chee in AMC and Netflixโ€™s Dark Winds, who came to support the film.

OUR Q&As GO BEYOND STANDARD QUESTIONS

Documentary filmmakers make films because they have something to say.
We screen the films, but we also talk the talk. For real.

* Q&As moderated by professional documentary filmmakers
* Focused on craft, process, and intent
* Designed to highlight the strengths and achievements of each film
* Structured to generate meaningful, substantive discussion

For filmmakers, this creates stronger promotion and a real opportunity to discuss both the subject matter and the filmmaking approach in tackling that topic.

๐ŸŒ

๐ŸŒ SELECTION AND PROGRAMMING

Angeles Documentary is a curated, competitive festival.

Selected films are considered for inclusion in the live screening program in Los Angeles. The final program is determined based on overall curation, programming coherence, available time, and event logistics.

The festival prioritizes building a focused and intentional screening experience rather than a high-volume program.

Screening opportunities are primarily allocated to films that align with the final program structure.

The festival reserves the right to maintain, merge, or remove award categories. A category will only be awarded if a sufficient level of quality is met among submissions.

The festival also reserves the right not to present awards or publish winners in any given category.

All programming and award decisions are final.

Really great and well planned event! I really enjoyed getting a space to see so many unique documentaries, and hear from the directors about how all of the films came together. Everyone who helped put this event together was really nice and had great communication throughout the whole process.

Angeles Documentary Festival was a wonderful experience from start to finish. From the moment we submitted our film to the moment we sat in the theater, everything felt smooth, clear, and genuinely filmmakerโ€‘focused.

When our documentary short, OAKLAND STRONG, was selected, the communication was professional and thoughtful. It was clear the festival team took the time to watch, understand, and respect each entry. They promised an intimate setting to celebrate the power of documentary storytellingโ€”and they delivered.

We were impressed by the quality of the selections, the depth of knowledge shared, and the sense of community in the room. Being honored with Best Very Short Documentary and Best DOP for a Documentary was meaningful, especially because it was evident the judging process took the work seriously.

I highly recommend the Angeles Doc Festival. It represents everything we hope for in a film festival experience.

Angeles Doc Festival was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Communication was clear, timely, and respectful of filmmakers, which is not always a given on the festival circuit.

The programming was thoughtful and curated with intention, and it was clear the festival genuinely values documentary work that takes risks, digs deep, and challenges audiences. We were honored to receive Best Feature Documentary and Best Research & Investigation, and those awards felt earned through a process that took the work seriously.

Angeles Doc treats filmmakers like partners rather than submissions in a queue. If you care about substance, integrity, and a festival that actually watches the films, this is one worth submitting to.

    Highly recommended.
