David Aguilar is a L.A. born Chicano who grew up in a place called Hangtown, which earned its infamous nickname due to numerous hangings performed by vigilantes during the California Gold Rush. Growing up in this unusual and unforgiving corner of the world is what first motivated Aguilar to discover himself through writing stories. He was fortunate to return home to L.A. for his teenage years and be accepted into UCLA Film School. Before becoming a TV Writer, Aguilar worked various industry and non-industry jobs alike. Inspired by his father’s mission for justice as a trial lawyer, Aguilar worked the graveyard shift for a private investigation firm conducting surveillance and gathering evidence. After sleeping only a few hours each night, Aguilar would wake up early to teach high school in the Latino community of Bell Gardens following in his mother’s footsteps as an educator. Aguilar is currently staffed on the reboot of the legal drama Matlock premiering on CBS in the Fall 2024. Previously he was a staff writer on the CBS crime drama S.W.A.T. and wrote the finale episode of a mini-series about the life of Franklin D. Roosevelt which premiered on the History Channel. Aguilar also wrote an animated short film, To the Letter, which won top prize at the CBS Leadership Pipeline Challenge. Aguilar is currently developing Trespassers, a neo-Western feature for director Alex Rivera dramatizing the 1967 New Mexico Courthouse Raid led by civil rights activist Reies Tijerina. Aguilar is a proud alum of both the Paramount Writers Mentoring Program and the National Hispanic Media Coalition’s TV Writers Program. He’s traveled to Chiapas, Mexico to teach filmmaking to the Zapatista guerrilla army as well as to Havana to study Cuban cinema. Aguilar lives in Pasadena, California with his fiancée Carolina. He is represented by Marathon Management.
