The Defense of Democracy Film Festival 2026 presents "The Price of Freedom" — a focused, immersive documentary festival that examines the real costs of defending truth, education, and democratic values in an era of rising censorship and extremism.

Held during Pride Month, the 2026 festival highlights documentary films that confront attacks on public education, book bans, censorship, the marginalization of LGBTQIA+ communities, and the erosion of intellectual and academic freedom. These films do more than document injustice — they ask who pays the price when voices are silenced, histories are erased, and fear is normalized.

Building on the impact of previous festivals that engaged thousands of viewers and activists nationwide, the 2026 program is intentionally designed as a concentrated virtual festival weekend, encouraging audiences to commit, watch, and engage deeply across all three days.

Following the festival weekend, select films will be featured in satellite screenings, accompanied by live Q&A discussions with filmmakers and educational partnerships.

The Defense of Democracy Film Festival seeks powerful documentary voices that illuminate the consequences of silence, challenge authoritarian narratives, and inspire collective action in defense of public education, free expression, and democratic resilience.

The Defense of Democracy Film Festival showcases documentary films that examine the price of freedom in contemporary society — exploring who bears the cost when democratic values are weakened, education is politicized, and expression is restricted.

Films may address, but are not limited to, the following focus areas:

The Impact of Extremism on Public Education (Preferred Focus)

Book Bans, Censorship, and the Fight for Intellectual Freedom

Teachers, Public Schools, and Educational Equity

Marginalization of LGBTQIA+ Communities and Attacks on Civil Rights

We welcome films that illuminate the human, cultural, and systemic consequences of censorship, erasure, and authoritarian influence — and that challenge audiences to consider what freedom truly costs, and who is made to pay it.

Submitting our documentary to the Defense of Democracy Film Festival was one of the most rewarding decisions we've made as filmmakers. From start to finish, the process was thoughtful, professional, and deeply mission-driven. What sets this festival apart is its unwavering commitment to uplifting stories that matter — stories that defend truth, justice, and democratic values in a time when those ideals are under pressure.

The communication from the organizers was exceptional — warm, responsive, and genuinely excited about our work.
Five stars. All heart. And a beacon of hope in these times.
