Chrystal Rose formed Spotlight Promotions in 1979, aged 17, along with her two older sisters, producing major public events, exhibitions, concerts in top London venues, managing budgets upwards of £500,000, writing business plans, forecasts, hiring staff, contributors, performers, negotiating employee contracts, organising radio and TV campaigns, employing graphic designers to create promotional material and proofing the artwork.
Aged 18, unbeknownst to her, walking on Acton High Street in West London, a photographer from the local newspaper took a shot of her which changed her life. Chrystal started to work as a fashion model all over the UK and Europe, moving into the realm of make-up artiste and a choreographer of fashion and dance shows. She has worked for such companies as Allders, BHS, Austria Mode Revue, Manchester Evening News, Liverpool Echo, Frank Usher, Mansfield, Hilderbrand, Eastex, Mondial, Waldmans, Jumo, Four Seasons to name but a few.
In 1984, aged 22, Chrystal won 3rd place in a Channel 4 screenplay writing competition with her original psychological thriller entitled, “The Fine Edge of Friendship”.
The ‘Great British Beauty’ title was bestowed upon Chrystal by ITV’s ‘This Morning’ programme in 1987, of which she is very proud.
Chrystal joined the Royal Court Youth Theatre in 1987 and through the 80’s and 90’s has had roles on TV shows such as Eastenders, The Bill, acted in stage shows and sung on Top of The Pops.
Her media work started on pirate radio, where she co-hosted a show, leading on to host her own on Spectrum Radio on which she interviewed guests and spoke about current affairs.
Her interest in TV stemmed from seeing ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ on Channel 4. It inspired her to believe that she too could present a talk show. Without any presentation or production skills, in 1990, Chrystal researched six highly topical subjects and funded her own pilots, creating a talk show which was commissioned and aired on Carlton TV. ‘The Chrystal Show’ ran for four series, 103 shows, alongside another, ‘Chrystal’s Style Guide’. Chrystal was the first woman in the UK, of any nationality, to host an eponymous TV talk show.
Chrystal’s first novel, “What a Bitch”, was published in 1996 by Fourth Estate.
Being a lover of classic old soul and reggae music, between 1997 and 2004, Chrystal managed ‘Diamonds’, a night club for the mature professional which was well attended by celebrities such as Lennox Lewis, Diane Abbott MP, Chris Eubank. She had sole responsibility for staff, promoting the venue and the club’s website content. She also staged New Year Eve Black Tie Balls for five years in the Hyatt Carlton Tower, Knightsbridge.
Chrystal has owned a clothing boutique in central London called Chrystal’s where she sold evening wear, shoes and costume jewellery on her own label.
Loving to create stories, Chrystal has written two novels, “40 Faking Fabulous,” which follows the family line of a fashion designer from her grandfather’s life who was born in Nigeria and travelled to the UK in the 1920’s. Her other novel, ‘United Kingdom Reparations’, is about a day-old baby girl found in a telephone box. That child goes on to do great things, including championing a petition for reparations for people of African and Caribbean descent living in the UK, whose forefathers were slaves.
Chrystal wrote, produced and directed a short film, “Too Young For Love’, which is the prequel to ‘United Kingdom Reparations’. ‘Too Young For Love’ tells the story of the teenage mother who left the baby in the telephone box. Along with these projects, Chrystal will be filming a documentary which will follow her journey as she strives for a theatrical release for all of her film vehicles, thus getting from script to the big screen.
Chrystal devised and licensed her board game, ‘Flash & Furious’ to Patch Products, an American toy company and it now sells in stores throughout the US including Target. This game is also a TV format.
As well as a singer, Chrystal writes songs and has written all of the lyrics for the original songs on the sound track for one of her feature scripts. “30 Faking Fabulous’.
An inhabitant of Atlanta, Georgia for five years, Chrystal is now back in the UK where she has formed her own company, ‘Chrystal Rose Promotions Limited’ to stage events, produce TV shows and movies.
Chrystal has one child, Louise Rose, who was lead singer in pop group ‘Precious’. The five-piece band had several top ten hits and represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1999.
