CHRIS BROADBENT
Chris Broadbent is an Australian Writer, Director and Actor.
From Hobart, Tasmania Chris is of Indigenous and English Heritage. As a director he is best known for short film BALACLAVA LANE and Covid horror DON’T GO DOWN THERE.
Originally from a performance background, having studied the art of The Meisner Technique, he would learn the art of layered instinctual storytelling and go on to work, as an Actor, on various productions from Studio films, Network television shows to independent films. At 27, Chris began screenwriting and in 2015 he wrote his first feature script titled ‘THE VALE’ based on his experiences growing up in a low economy housing commission neighbourhood, but before venturing into feature film making in 2016, Chris wrote short film ‘BALACLAVA LANE’, which he would also direct. Balaclava Lane would go on to be selected and win in various film festivals around the world and be a contender at the prestigious AACTA awards.
In 2017 Chris would begin a new project finding his voice within his Indigenous heritage. Titled ‘IT WILL FIND YOU’ the script focuses on telling a story based off of the Indigenous creature- The Giniirr, an evil spirit warned by the elders of The Gamilaraay people. Chris would spend 5 years developing the script and work closely, alongside highly respected Gamilaraay elders to tell the story as authentic as possible.
In 2021 Chris launched his company MERAKI FILMS, a boutique production house focusing on genre based content and is currently developing a slate of feature project in the horror genre space..
