Welcome to the Carmarthen Bay Film Festival (CBFF), the highly respected BAFTA British Short Film Competition Qualifying Festival, BIFA (British Independent Film Awards), BAFTA Cymru/Wales, BAFTA Scotland and IMDb Qualifying Festival.

CBFF is held in person every year in Llanelli, west Wales, as well as screened online. Over the course of 4 days in May, we screen around 130 independent films from Wales, the UK and all over the world, as well as holding special and industry-specific events and closing with a wonderful awards night.

Since its inception in 2012, the festival's core mission has been to champion independent filmmaking in Wales and beyond. Our goal is to unite filmmakers, industry professionals, students, and film enthusiasts, encouraging a vibrant community that is passionate about the art of cinema.

Why submit your film to CBFF?

CBFF is a BAFTA and BIFA-qualifying festival. This means that if your film is screened at CBFF and you meet their eligibility criteria, you are well on the way to being able to submit your film to BAFTA and BIFA. We are also an IMDb-qualifying festival.

One of the major strengths of the festival is that we screen a lot of films- on average 130 films over 4 days and whether you’re submitting a short film or a feature, you may have the opportunity to see your work on the big screen.

We are a festival run by filmmakers, for filmmakers and we know what is important to you, from rising stars and those starting out in the world of film, to seasoned professionals. We hold networking events, ‘Meet the Commissioners’ sessions and Q&A talks with other industry professionals that are always well-received and valued.

In addition to the in-person festival, selected films are also screened on our online platform and many of the events are live-streamed.

The John Hefin Lifetime Achievement Award
Each year at the CBFF Awards Night, we celebrate the achievements of Welsh media professionals who have made significant contributions to film, television, theatre or drama in Wales.

John Hefin (1941–2012) was a pivotal figure in Welsh media, known for co-creating the long-running Welsh soap opera “Pobol y Cwm” and directing the comedy film “Grand Slam.” His work significantly influenced Welsh television and culture and we are honoured to be associated with his name.

Recent recipients of the award include Marc Evans, Mark Lewis-Jones, Angharad Mair, Elin Rhys and Arfon Haines Davies

Officially selected - Your film has been considered to be of a high standard and worthy of being screened during the festival itself. This is the first step of a three-stage process.

Nominated - A number of the officially selected films are shortlisted to be judged for the category awards. These are the nominated films

Winner – One film is selected from the nominations of each category to be named the winner

The Organisers reserve the right to disqualify, without refund of any or all submission fees if any rules and terms are not followed. By submitting your film to CBFF you agree to the following:

Films can be submitted from any country.
The festival does not require premiere status for any film.
It is the sole responsibility of the Applicant to secure clearance from the copyright holders of any copyrighted materials included within the submitted Film. The Organisers will not be held responsible for the unauthorised inclusion of any copyrighted materials within or relating to the submitted Film.

Films that contain significant non-English spoken dialogue must provide on-screen English subtitles.

Films in English should not have subtitles burned in unless they are an integral element of the film.

Any submissions that may be deemed offensive will not be selected, and the organisers reserve the right to disqualify without notice, without refunding the submission fee
If your project is selected you must make all materials related to your project available for the in-person and online festival by the deadline requested. Failure to do so will result in the selection being withdrawn. The festival is a hybrid event, with selected films available online via our closed platform. Access to this is international and as standard, we will not geo-block content, but this can be done on request.

Selections, nominations and winners are chosen at the discretion of CBFF and the decision is final.

CBFF will not pay a screening or licence fee in any circumstance and cannot help with accommodation or travel expenses.

Submitted films must have been completed after 15 May 2025 to be eligible.
Student discount may only be used by either undergraduates or postgraduates one year after leaving full or part-time study.

Due to the sheer number of submissions we receive each year, it is not possible to provide feedback on unsuccessful submissions.

We do not offer refunds for submissions under any circumstances.

Filmmakers must submit their films via an online screener. Please note that we do not accept subsequent cuts or more complete versions of submitted films after the initial submission.

All submissions must be paid through the FilmFreeway platform. The submission fee is non-refundable.

Screenings are scheduled at CBFF's discretion. While every effort will be made to adhere to the published schedule, we reserve the right to make changes at any time for any reason without notice.

Selected films must acknowledge that CBFF reserves the right to promote the films on its website and social media using both images and videos provided by you.
The festival does not grant fee waivers.

Anytime after 5th May, films cannot be withdrawn as print, video trailers, and website work are too far underway. Any changes would cause a lot of extra work that would then have to be invoiced for and paid for by the withdrawer.

The final deadline for submissions is 2 March 2027. Film submissions will not be accepted for competition after this date.

If your film is shortlisted, you will be requested to provide a high-quality screening copy of the original film as a data file via online transfer and as .mov, .avi, .mpeg or .mp4 format in either standard definition or as HDV1080i/p. If CBFF does not receive your film within the timescale supplied, your film will no longer be eligible to be screened.

Please note that films submitted through the incorrect category will not be considered. Please carefully read the category descriptions before submitting.

CBFF will not consider films where AI has replaced the role of creatives.
