Cardiff Animation Nights (CAN) are free monthly screenings of great animation from around the world at The Underdog in the centre of Cardiff and online. We screen some of the best animated short films from the global animation festival circuit, giving people in Cardiff a chance to watch independent animation on the big screen and meet like-minded people.

Cardiff Animation Nights has been running for 8 years, and has grown from our first event in the back of a small venue in Cardiff to just 20 people, to a monthly in-person and online event in Cardiff with over 120 people attending each month.

To date we have screened over 600 animated films at venues in Cardiff and online.

Cardiff Animation Nights is run by a team of animators and animation lovers in Cardiff, led by Ellys Donovan and Lauren Orme, with help and support from numerous individuals and organisations from the animation community in Cardiff and further afield.

Cardiff Animation Nights has a rolling deadline. You will receive a notification if your film has been selected. If you haven't heard from us this means your film is still in the running to be featured.

Each month a selection of films that have been submitted will be selected to be screened at the monthly Cardiff Animation Nights either online or in-person.

One film from each month's selection will be put forward by an industry judge as a nominee for the annual Cardiff Animation Nights awards.

All the films selected by the jury will be screened and a winning film selected by the audience in December 2023!

We accept all types of animated short films including: narrative shorts, non-narrative/experimental shorts, fiction shorts, documentary shorts, undergraduate shorts, postgraduate shorts, shorts made by young people, commissioned shorts, music videos, and micro shorts from all countries worldwide. We welcome all animation techniques.

Short films submitted must not exceed 20 minutes.

Filmmakers may submit more than one film. A separate entry form and entry fee must be submitted for each.

You must select if you would like your film to be screened in-person and/or online.

Cardiff Animation Nights online is streamed live on our YouTube Channel. Please note we don’t intend on using geo-blocking online, as we want to ensure as many people have access to our programmes online as possible.

We require .mov or .mp4 format.

Films must comprise at least 50% animation to be considered.

Films featuring languages other than English must have English subtitles.

Short films already publicly viewable online are welcome and eligible for consideration.

Each applicant must be the rightful owner of submitted films and own all literary and musical rights.

If your film is selected, you allow us to use brief excerpts (stills & video clips) in promotional and marketing campaigns. We are happy to use any trailer you may have. We will not use any media from any films not selected.

The decision of the selection panel is final and we regret that we cannot enter into correspondence regarding films not selected.

Cardiff Animation Nights is a separate event to Cardiff Animation Festival.

Deadline for submissions is rolling and will conclude on Thursday 16th November 2023.
