Caitlyn C. Johnson is an award-winning Brooklyn-based writer, director, and producer from the South Side of Chicago. Raised by descendants of the great migration inside a working-class home, Caitlyn recalls stories told at family gatherings, on phone calls, or routine visits to her auntie’s house. This bond with storytelling continues in Caitlyn’s work which furthers the sacred tradition by examining the internal struggles, joys, and unique worlds that Black, queer folks inhabit.
Caitlyn received a B.S. in Cinema Studies from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Certification of Cinematography from Prague’s FAMU, and an MFA in Film Production from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Caitlyn was selected for the Gotham EDU Career & Media Development program, and is the recipient of the Tisch Scholarship, Washington College Presidential Fellowship, Metrograph Production Fellowship and was the co-recipient of Bustle’s Emerging Female Filmmakers award. Caitlyn's screenwriting has been recognized by Austin Film Festival, Stowe Story Labs and the AnnaRose King Foundation. In 2023, her short film, Bad Blood (2022), premiered at Greenpoint Film Festival, Black Harvest Film Festival, and was a finalist at Black August Film Festival. Caitlyn is currently in post-production on her upcoming short, Candy Girl: The Game is Cold but Fair, and is developing her first feature.
