We exist to discover bold, original voices from around the world and give them the platform they deserve. Whether you're making your first short film or premiering your latest feature, Bittersweet is a place where filmmakers are valued, supported and celebrated.

More than a film festival, Bittersweet is a growing community of filmmakers, actors and cinema lovers brought together by a shared passion for independent storytelling. Every official selection becomes part of that community.

Our screenings are carefully curated to create unforgettable cinematic experiences in unique venues across the UK, introducing audiences to exceptional films they may never have discovered otherwise. We believe festivals should be more than competitions, they should create conversations, connections and opportunities that continue long after the credits roll.

Every film submitted is viewed with care by our programming team. We know the work, time and vulnerability that goes into making a film, and we're committed to treating every submission with the respect it deserves. Selected filmmakers receive clear communication throughout the process, and our optional review categories provide detailed written feedback designed to help filmmakers continue developing their craft.

Bittersweet isn't just a festival. Through our growing platform, we champion independent cinema year- round with curated recommendations, filmmaker features, original content and a community dedicated to discovering remarkable films from every corner of the world.

If your film challenges, surprises, moves, scares, makes you laugh or stays with people, we'd love to watch it.

Welcome to Bittersweet.

Awards & Recognition

Every officially selected film becomes part of the Bittersweet Film Festival Official Selection and receives an official digital laurel.

From the Official Selections, our jury will choose the Finalists, Honourable Mentions and Category Winners. These films will be celebrated throughout the festival and showcased to our audience at The ARC cinema in Blackpool (previously Backlot) an incredible cinema complex

Winners will be announced live during the festival awards ceremony and will receive a range of prizes including official laurels, certificates, bespoke Bittersweet trophies and additional partner awards where applicable.

At Bittersweet, we believe recognition should extend beyond a single evening. Selected films and award winners will also be promoted across the Bittersweet platform and social media channels.
