Aquarius Ester Alegria is an Afro-Surrealist film writer/director and performance artist from Roseland creating works that explore the generational effects of imperialism and religious trauma. Aquarius' performance work includes solo projects and collaborations supporting several live and recorded compositions across Chicago. Aquarius' film, Ambivert (2016), was examined by the Disability in Media Studies course at NYU, then adapted for audiences with vision impairment. She is a 2020 OTV Film Fellow and a participant in Full Spectrum Feature's 2021 Independent Producer's Lab. In 2021, Aquarius received the Englewood Arts Collective's United Still Grant. In 2025 her film, New Hire, was featured in, Our Right to Gaze, a six-city film anthology tour and won Best Cinematography at Flex Obscura's 2024 Film Festival. Aquarius recently presented a mixed media project in a group exhibition at Third City Studio in Chicago, Illinois and is pursuing live video and audio performances.
