April Mae & The June Bugs
April Mae & The June Bugs’ signature sound has grown and evolved from the wellspring of American roots music, like intoxicating vintage jazz swing, unbridled Americana, effervescent rockabilly, turn of the century New Orleans jazz and the spirited jump blues of the 1930's and 1940's. The spirituality of this music is one of absolute joy!
When the air turns crisp and the leaves rustle in the wind, they may feel enlivened and enchanted by the season of Halloween. They may be enthralled my magical lore and myth, and find wonder in the art of storytelling in song that infuses our bewitching album "Boogie Boo Deluxe."
The album received airplay on over one hundred radio stations across the US and Europe, one station reported their highest listenership ever during a featured full album spin on Halloween. (Curious ears and minds are invited to visit www.AprilMae.com for a listen.)
(Prior to the pandemic) AM&TJB chased their thrill performing and traveling in their award winning "Boogie Bus." Boasting a zero carbon emission footprint and conjuring classic nineteen-forties style, thusly named for our musical mantra “It’s All About The Boogie” proclaimed on her destination plate.
On their travels they’ve performed with many musicians including Pete Seeger, Rockabilly Hall of Famer J.M. Van Eaton, Eric Frey of the Revelers/Red Stick Ramblers, and New Orleans’ Washboard Chaz. Supporting line ups include Wanda Jackson, Imelda May, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, Cyril Neville, Rick Estrin & The Night Cats, Gina Sicilia, and Justin Johnson and among others.
Effervescent songstress April Mae serves as lead vocalist, washboard percussionist and kazoozaphonist for April Mae & The June Bugs. Dubbed the “The Breakout Surprise Act” by concert reviewing journalists on multiple occasions, the band also features instrumentalist ‘Catfish’ Dave Fecca – cigar box guitar, banjo and mandolin, Topher Horner - upright bass, and Tony Mascara – drums/percussion.
Released in 2016, their fourth album “Sun Kissed! The Sun Studio Sessions” was recorded at the legendary Memphis studio, where the tiles still vibrate with the reverberations of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash.
Sirius Radio’s Big Jim Sykes (Elvis Radio) declared the album “Real, raucous and righteous! A re-envisioning of the past while innovative and extremely fun.” Drawing inspiration from the exciting flux of roots genres that gave birth to rock n’ roll, Sun Kissed is true to form in it’s music and process, recorded completely live on beautiful vintage ribbon microphones and analog tape, with Grammy Award winning engineer Matt Ross-Spang and Curry Weber at the helm.
Musical guests Rockabilly Hall of Fame drummer J.M. Van Eaton (Jerry Lee Lewis’s Sun Records hits) and Grammy nominated upright bassist Eric Frey (Red Stick Ramblers, The Revelers and the Hank Williams film I Saw the Light) bring an innovative coupling of styles with JM’s 1950’s sizzling rockabilly percussion joining Eric’s infectiously jubilant Louisiana based rhythmic style.
Previous releases Grease It Up & Go (2015), Boogie (2012), April Mae & The June Bugs (2010), and the Blues Woman International release “The Hopson Sessions” (2013) all stir the pot of American roots music. Creatively nourished by a wonderful blending of jump blues, rockabilly, and swing; colored with elements of bluegrass, delta jug band and early New Orleans jazz. Their songwriting and reinterpretations are fresh, inventive and often fun – landing April Mae’s song “Some Iz Good” placement on the Roots Radio/Blues Chart, and garnering accolades from roots, blues, and rockabilly publications, including radio airplay in North America and Europe.
Proclaimed “Great Fun!“ by Sing Out! Magazine, WWOZ (New Orleans Jazz & Heritage station) and Imelda May, among many others; The June Bugs’ varied mix of high energy Americana, and expansive breadth of genre-bending stylings, has made them a beloved act along the eastern seaboard and the south. Resonating with swing dancers, folkies, cigar box guitar enthusiasts and rockabillies alike.
