The AQFF was founded in 2014. The festival has been covered by media outlets around the country, including Huffington Post and Indiewire. Our founders have been named to Vice's 50 LGBTQ Activists in 50 States list. We are a branch of the 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Appalachian Arts Academy.

We are celebrating 10 years this year! This year's festival will be September 27th and 28th 2024 in Shepherdstown, WV at the Franks Art Center.

We accept films that contain Queer and/or Trans content or have a Queer and/trans writer, director, or producer. We love films that have rural settings, especially Appalachian settings, but that is not a requirement.

  • The Appalachian Queer Film Festival stands as a vital platform for LGBTQ+ voices, curating a compelling selection of narratives that resonate deeply within the community. It was an honor to have my film selected for the 2023 lineup.

The festival’s commitment to showcasing diverse stories is apparent, and I was inspired to learn how well my work harmonized with other films that provoke thought and evoke strong emotional responses. The festival does a great job in fostering a supportive and engaging atmosphere for both filmmakers and viewers. It’s not one to be missed!

This was a fantastic Film Festival! I am so proud to have been part of this event. The programmer John was very supportive in every manner in helping me navigate sending one of my actors to the event in person. Great job Appalachian Queer Film Festival!!!
