Anton Fisher is the award-winning writer and co-producer of the short fiction film ADDRESS UNKNOWN. The film won the award for BEST SHORT FILM at the 2021 South African Film and Television Awards and two Writers Guild of SA Muse awards.
Anton Fisher (born 1960) is the first of three siblings who were raised by their mother after their father drowned at sea. Anton was 8 years old at the time of his father's passing. He attended high school at the Livingstone High School in Claremont, Cape Town. After completing high school, he enrolled at the University of Cape Town (UCT) with the intention of become a teacher. But after a year of teaching in 1981, Anton was kicked out of the profession for his fierce stance against apartheid. Later he was employed as a journalist at the Cape Times and later worked for an anti-apartheid newspaper called South. For several years he then worked in communication for various government departments.
Anton has always loved film. As a child he and his friends watched a black and white series called Johnny Soko and his Robot, or something like that. Serial Westerns like Shane were another of his favourites. Then there was the hit film The Sound of Music which he absolutely adored. Decades later he can't resist the temptation of watching the film one more time.
Then there was the Superhero series of Batman and Robin that enticed Anton and his mates to make costumes of these amazing superheroes. At other times, he and his friends would take on the characters of Flash and Spiderman.
To develop his movie making skills, Anton has attended several workshops on script writing and on film production.
As an adult this love of film continued with favourites such as Fame, The Champ, Born on the Fourth of July, Fried Green Tomatoes, American Gangster, The Gladiator, in no particular order, because that would be an injustice to the many professionals who work behind the scenes on these and on all productions for that matter.
Anton has a very dry sense of humour and has a reputation among his friends for being able to recite line upon line from the famous Monty Python series. His friends often accuse him of laughing hysterically at his jokes before he even gets to the punchline.
Then there is his eclectic love of music and reading. Musical favourites range from The Beatles to Bruce Springsteen to Pete Seeger to Keith Jarrett, Bob James, The Crusaders, Simon and Garfunkel, the Bee Gees, and local favourites such as Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba and Abdullah Ibrahim.
In the mid-90s Anton left Cape Town and settled in Pretoria, the capital of South Africa. After his move from Cape Town to Pretoria, he met Nompumelelo and they married a year later. They have a daughter Lebogang and a son Nkosi. Lebogang completed a one-year course in acting at the New York Film Academy and completed a Bachelor's degree in drama. She is currently living in London. Nkosi is at high school.
