LOGLINE:
Living UN DONE' reveals the powerful stories of individuals and families shattered by a criminal justice system that stigmatizes formerly incarcerated individuals and fails to provide an effective path to rehabilitation.
YUSEF SALAAM appears in the film. The internationally recognized author, activist, motivational speaker, and now American politician, who has been serving as a member of New York City's 9th City Council district since 2024 was wrongly convicted along with four other young men in the Central Park Five case, when he was just 15 years old.
BETTY ANNE WATERS also appears in the film. Her remarkable journey inspired the Hollywood film “Conviction,” featuring Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell, and she shares her personal story of how difficult it was to witness her brother's wrongful conviction. As a single mother and a waitress with only a high school equivalency at the time, Betty Anne faced immense challenges as she fought to free her brother, Kenneth Waters, who was wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. Undeterred by her circumstances, she put herself through college and then law school. After an exhausting 18-year battle, her relentless determination, along with her new law degree and the support of Barry Scheck from the Innocence Project, culminated in Kenneth’s exoneration. Betty Anne became a lawyer just to ensure her brother's freedom.
SYNOPSIS:
In "Living UN DONE," first-time director Amanda Cryer urges us to confront our complicity in a justice system that brands individuals with a scarlet letter—an indelible mark they carry for life. While this story is not entirely unique, at the heart of "Living UN DONE" lies a profound truth: a single lapse in judgment—whether a moment of reckless college partying or a misguided choice driven by anger—can irrevocably alter lives. It serves as a stark reminder that our children, friends, and family can find themselves ensnared in a tragic spiral, causing harm that echoes far beyond the moment of impact.
This film reveals the emotional turmoil faced not only by those trapped in a system that prioritizes punishment over healing, but also the impact on their families. The harsh reality is that this system thrives on profits, with no financial incentive for genuine rehabilitation. The film also highlights the interconnected struggles of incarceration, mental health, and addiction that devastate countless individuals, families and communities.
Our goal with this film is to transcend political divides, reminding us that these aren't just partisan issues; they are human issues. We worked with both Democrats and Republicans who are committed to criminal justice reform - proof that unity is possible. As individuals who have seen firsthand the damaging effects of a retributive criminal justice system on our own families, friends and colleagues, we are committed to illuminating the stories of individuals and families who have been impacted by this system. These stories remind us that we all share responsibility in addressing these systemic issues and advocating for a society that encourages and supports recovery and new beginnings.
