Ally May is an award winning Writer-Director. In 2023 Ally’s film THE LAST PICTURE won a number of number of awards including the Best Narrative Short in the Toronto International Women Film Festival and Best Director in Female Feedback Film Festival. Her many films have placed in notable festivals including the Oscar qualifying HollyShorts, Flicker Rhode Island International Film Fest and the Catalina Film Festival.
Ally’s brand is haunting thrillers and dramas with emotionally stunted characters that grow beyond their pain and fears .
Ally grew up in East San Jose where her childhood was filled with trauma, abuse and violence. With chaos all around her, she turned to movies for comfort and learned to tell herself stories. Later, she started telling other people her stories. This led to a Bachelor of Arts in American Literature with a focus on Cinema. Later she continued to develop her craft in the art of cinema writing in the UCLA Writing Program and later at the Academy of Film Writing.
After a stroke in 2017, Ally was temporarily unable to write, so she decided to study other aspects of filmmaking, which led to her love of directing. Ally attended SF Film School, the Joan Scheckel Film Making Labs, the Directing Actors Workshops and the Sundance Directing Program. Ally believes in constantly learning and growing as a writer and filmmaker.
Currently Ally is in preproduction on two feature films and before the WGA strike she was attached to direct a pilot, so fingers are crossed on that one.
