Alexandra Strunin is a Polish director of Ukrainian and Russian descent, a writer, and an audiovisual artist. Her work explores identity, power, propaganda, and the ways political violence intersects with intimate life.
She graduated in Photography from the University of the Arts in Poznań and is currently completing her Directing studies at the Warsaw Film School. Her background in photography and music translates into cinema focused on atmosphere, rhythm, and emotional precision.
Her newest short film, My Name Is Joy (2026), is a 12-minute drama developed in consultation with the La Strada Foundation. It follows a young Mozambican woman rebuilding her life in a small Polish town after surviving human trafficking. The film recently secured an official selection at the Oscar®-qualifying Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival.
Her previous short fiction debut, I Gaze at the Sky (2025)—set during the first days of the full-scale war in Ukraine—screened in the official selection at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia and at over 20 festivals worldwide. It received major industry recognition, including the Audience Award for Best International Short at the Oscar®-qualifying Florida Film Festival, Best International Short Film at the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival, and the Grand Prize at the March On! Festival in Washington.
Strunin is currently developing her feature-length debut.
