Alexander Wolfgang Smadja is a Belgian film director and screenwriter based in Brussels, known for blending personal storytelling with striking contrasts. With a Flemish mother and Jewish grandparents, his multicultural upbringing deeply influences his work, which explores the complexity of human emotions through a mix of absurdity and authenticity.
With a background in VFX, he began his career directing music videos and visuals for Belgian artists like UM!, Glints, and BeatsforBeaches. He later earned a bachelor’s in film directing from Luca School of Arts, where he made several short films, including Almost Nowhere, Fortress, and You Better Go Now, all of which were selected for various festivals.
Influenced by B-movies, Alexander uses humor and surrealism to delve into emotional depth, examining how film shapes our experiences. His graduation film, The World is My Idea, is a reflection of this distinctive approach.
