Alex Schuurbiers (NL, 1990) is an autodidact analogue photographer, filmmaker and writer living and working in Belgium. She studied Theatre- Film and Literature Sciences at the University of Antwerp. After years of travelling, writing short stories and shooting portraits, she followed her dream of combining text with moving image and started producing her first short film, EN VAGUES. She took part in a 16mm workshop in LABO BXL in August 2021, creating the short film HANDWERK, filmed on a Bolex camera and edited manually on a Steenbeck editing table - after which she fell even more in love with the medium. She went on to film EN VAGUES on Ouessant, a small rocky island off the coast of Brittany, in October 2021. Currently she is working on the post production of WHERE I LAY MY HEAD TO REST, shot on 16mm by filmmaker Ans Mertens, and starting the production of SONG OF HOMEHOMING (working title), her first foray into more documentary-based filmmaking.
