Back in the late 1960’s and 70’s, all five boroughs in New York City were filled with gang violence. The Vietnam war was at its peak and the civil rights movement was making headlines. Drugs wars and its addiction were commonplace; thus, many lives were destroyed. At this time, many teenagers found solace in the tribal mentality that street gangs offered. Death was around every corner and juvenile delinquency was at its highest. Every week there were many innocent people killed throughout the city. It was at this time in 1970 that Albert Dakota Sanchez, known as Levon the taylor the patch maker, along with a few friends, William (Blushy) Ortiz, Juan (Magilla) Jimenez, (Little boy) and Berto Velez became the founding members of the Devils Rebels street gang. Sanchez created the name Devils Rebels and the design that would to this date be recognized as their patches. The patches were worn on the back of jackets signifying their membership, alliance and dedication to the gang. The members grew up together and felt it was a way of protecting themselves from other gangs. In a sequence of time and events throughout the years Sanchez later unexpectedly became a father and his life and journey changed. Sanchez dropped out of school and was illiterate with no skills but was determined to change his life. He taught himself how to read and write and followed his dream of photography. His mindset changed to that of a father making a paycheck to support his family while educating himself for a brighter economic future. Maintaining his identity as a former founding member of the Devils Rebels, Sanchez decided to use the name in a future project but giving it a positive spin. He enrolled and graduated photography school and continued to enhance his skills. He is a self-taught graphic designer and engulfs himself in his work with passion and inner belief. Sanchez does not believe in looking for the time or opportunity but in its stead, makes the time and creates his own opportunities. Sanchez eventually moved to Florida and gave life to his new idea thus the Devils Rebels Magazine was born. It features a multitude of models and artistic photography in relation to “a rebel in life attitude.” This is just the beginning as the journey continues.
