Norman Maake, born in Johannesburg in 1978, is a South African filmmaker. He graduated from AFDA - The South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance. Maake began his directing career with the short film "Home Sweet Home" in 1999. In 2001, he directed his first feature film, "Soldiers of the Rock," which received critical acclaim.
"Soldiers of the Rock" won Best Screenplay and the Jury Prize for Best Upcoming Director at PAFF 2003 (Pan African Film Festival) and also received the Mario Van Peebles award in 2004. The film was screened at over one hundred international film festivals, establishing Maake as a promising new voice in South African cinema following years of Apartheid.
In 2019, Maake directed the romantic comedy "Love Lives Here," followed by the comedy "Piets Sake" in 2021 and "Abafana Ababi" in 2022. Additionally, in 2022, he wrote and directed the action film "Inkabi: The Hitman," set to be released in 2024.
Maake's latest offering is a horror film titled "The Beast," scheduled for release in 2024. This will mark his seventh fiction feature film as a director.
