Adalet R. Garmiany is a Sufi Dervish and an experimental artist from Iraqi Kurdistan. His family was persecuted during the genocidal campaign of the Saddam Hussein regime. In 1990, Adalet studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Mosul. Being recognised as a Kurd because of his clothes, he was detained and mistreated in the 'Nabi Younis' police centre. Soon after, he returned to the Kurdistan Region. Despite poverty and violent turmoil around him, Adalet studied and continued to make art using any material and medium he could access.
As a refugee in the United Kingdom in 2000, Adalet made his first public appearance and since then has made a long list of appearances in Europe, the United States and in the Middle East, discussing areas of art, cultural exchange and cultural conflict. He has organised international conferences and been invited onto advising boards of various institutions. Adalet’s interest is practicing and teaching about art in conflict zones and giving messages on how to overcome hatred. In 2004, in the UK, he founded his own non-profit label, ArtRole, which is an international contemporary arts organisation dedicated to building a cultural bridge between the Middle East and the rest of the world.
After the end of the Da'esh terror in Mosul, Adalet wished to document the state of the city but there was still a host of security issues. In late 2018, he found his avatar in Mohammad Al-Shabaki, a man he saw smiling at him in a street of the Old Town. In May 2019, Adalet went there again with his film crew to begin work on his first film feature and tell his story of Mosul My Home.
