Akari is a filmmaker (writer, director, editor) and photographer, based in Brooklyn, New York. She originally hails from Seattle, Washington where she attended the University of Washington and studied Photo/Media, Cinema & Media Studies and Art History and lived most of her life.
With her background in film history and photography, she threw herself into production at the end of college and hasn't stopped since as a mainly self-taught artist. Akari's moving pieces so far consist of the short form: films and music visuals, with two projects shown at Scope Screenings, an underground festival, in Seattle.
Slice of life is her bread and butter--she is drawn to stories that explore feelings of hope within melancholy and make "big" emotions feel accessible, feel normal, feel human. She has written and directed HAPA, a semi autobiographical story and TRADITION, a challenge to write a piece that takes place in mainly one location.
Akari is also the co-founder and co-curator of WRITE CLUB, a workshopping event that focuses on short form writing before they are produced on stage or screen, that fosters community and connects writers to performers.
She is looking forward to the future and to one day directing a feature film.
