The 305 International Improv Fest celebrates its 10th edition in 2026. The festival is an interdisciplinary platform dedicated to improvisation in performance, dance, and film, bringing together filmmakers, performers, and multidisciplinary artists whose work explores spontaneity, real-time creation, and the relationship between movement and image.

The festival takes place in two locations: Miami, Florida (USA) and Costa Rica. The Miami edition is presented in collaboration with O Cinema South Beach, while the Costa Rica program is developed in partnership with the University of Costa Rica – Sede del Pacífico.

The film program focuses on experimental cinema, dance film / screendance, and hybrid moving image works that engage with improvisation, embodiment, and contemporary artistic practices.

Selected films become part of the official curated program of the festival and are presented in public screenings in Miami and Costa Rica alongside live performances, artist talks, and workshops.

The festival also hosts the ST-AIR-E (Short-Term Artist-in-Residence Exchange) program. Through this initiative, one filmmaker and one choreographer from Miami and Costa Rica participate in short artistic residencies in the partner country. Filmmakers create an experimental dance short film during the residency, while choreographers present new works developed through the exchange. The resulting works premiere as part of the festival program in both locations.

The 305 International Improv Fest welcomes submissions from artists working across disciplines whose work expands the possibilities of movement, improvisation, and the moving image.

Selected films will be presented as part of the 305 International Improv Fest official program, with screenings in Miami, Florida (May 7–9) in collaboration with O Cinema, and additional programming in Costa Rica (May 14–16) in partnership with Universidad de Costa Rica – Sede del Pacífico.

Selected artists receive:

• Official festival screening as part of the curated Dance Film / Experimental Film program
• Public screenings at O Cinema (Miami) and partner venues in Costa Rica
• International exposure to audiences and artists from the United States and Latin America
• Opportunities to participate in artist talks, workshops, and networking events

Commissioned Artists Program

Each year the festival commissions new works by invited artists from Miami and Costa Rica through a cross-cultural artistic exchange.

Dance Commission
One choreographer from Miami and one from Costa Rica are commissioned to create an original performance work that is presented in both countries during the festival.

Film Commission (in collaboration with O Cinema)
One filmmaker from each country is commissioned to create a short experimental dance film during the festival’s Short-Term Artist-in-Residence (ST-AIR) Exchange, receiving mentorship and participating in workshops. The completed films premiere during the festival and are screened in both cities.

Films must include elements of improvisation, unscripted performance, or spontaneous creation.

Maximum runtime: 12 minutes.

All genres are welcome provided the work engages with improvisation, movement, or experimental approaches to the moving image.

Films do not need to be premieres.

Non-English language films must include English subtitles.

Selected films may be screened in Miami (USA) and Costa Rica as part of the official festival program.

Documentation of live performances or simple recordings of stage works will not be considered.

I can't say enough about this festival and the way its staff treats filmmakers and artists. The workshops and film screenings are outstanding in both cities (Miami and La Habana) I just hope there were more festivals like this!

I participated in the Havana portion of this year's festival and it was amazing! The festival is very well organized and is an incredible opportunity to experience a new country while presenting your work to an extremely diverse audience. The audience that came to the screenings was truly international.
