Experiencing Interruptions?

who are leaving ?

“it doesn’t have to be understood; it doesn't have to not be understood”
This is what keeps repeating the intruder, the character who haunts the film. “who are leaving ?” is an essay-film around the question of mourning. Is it the dead one who left ? as is often said. Or is it those who remain, who leave and abandon the dead ? The film is not about death, the one that awaits everyone, but it evokes the lives of those who remain, in a poetic form with a touch of humor.

Director Biography - Fred Périé

Fred Périé has had an atypical career. Originally trained as a scientist, but haunted by the question of the other, he soon began creating audiovisual installations in which the presence and absence of the spectator is manifest. His approach is close to that of experimental cinema, and he has adapted several of these installations for theatrical release. He also writes poetic texts which he now uses as inspiration for his essay-films :
Eternity, poetic essay, 15', 2021, FLIGHT selection Mostra Internationale del cinema di Genova 2021
Nous ne sommes pas des moutons, poetic essay, 13', 2019, selected for the Festival Universitaire du Film Underground 2019
L'autre de l'autre, documentary installation, 83', 2018, project selected at the Côté-court 2017 festival in the new media section

Director Statement

At every burial, we are deeply affected by the moment when we have to leave the dead person. The image of the coffin at the bottom of the still-open grave leaves us in disarray. The body of the deceased is in an empty space, in the open air, and those who remain leave... feeling, as we do, the trouble of abandoning the beloved body in that manner! The physical separation is the beginning of another confusion, as the deceased continues to accompany the living. Without even mentioning ghosts, the dead person enters a new mode of existence.
On the other hand, today's world speaks again and again of the horror of death, whereas in fact it promptly dismisses the dead by assigning the living to mourning. Don't we often say "you have to mourn"? What is there to do? In fact, there is nothing to do, nothing to explain. It's life that counts here, life after death.
The dead connect us in spirit, with all the ambiguity that this word carries today. At the other end of the spectrum we have industry, which we see as another form of death, because its purpose is to organize the world, to organize everything, to the point of ignoring the living. So if the film is haunted, it's by the machines of the world – airplanes, drones, smartphones – which are present in the images and sounds.
