Years ago airports and train stations were considered “non-places” but now they have become symbols of modern society, reflecting people’s growing mobility, global interconnection, cultural diversity, and technological impact. They play a fundamental role in economy, tourism, and social development, while remaining at the center of challenges regarding environmental sustainability, and management of the growing demand for transportation.
As a matter of fact, in the 2000s, the increasing awareness of transportation’s environmental impact led to a greater interest towards sustainability within airports and train stations. Measures have been taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and promote public transportation as an alternative to traveling by car.
