As an award-winning screenwriter, Matthew loves to explore the paradoxical nature of human existence through writing expansive horror, mystery, and crime stories.
He is currently developing a pitch deck for an animated workplace comedy and a horror feature.
With THE SAMCA FILE, we set out to make a fake true-crime feature, the first of its kind attempted in Romania, and we wanted to explore how this genre could resonate with Romanian audiences while still pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling.
Beyond the framework of mystery and suspense, the film addresses issues we believe are vital to confront. In particular, the bullying that is endemic in Romanian schools, an everyday violence that is too often minimized or swept under the rug. The crimes in the film are fictional, but the culture of silence and complicity around bullying is painfully real.
At the same time, the film is about the ethics of storytelling itself. The documentary filmmakers inside the narrative become a mirror for our industry. Their persistence often retraumatizes the very victims and witnesses whose stories they claim to honor. The producers, in turn, are only interested in ratings and sensationalism, while the filmmakers struggle with their own desire to create meaningful art. This tension, between commerce and integrity, trauma and exploitation, art and market, lies at the heart of our project.
Our hope is that audiences will not only be drawn into the mystery, but also leave with questions about the way we tell stories, the cost of those stories, and the responsibility we bear toward the people whose lives we represent on screen.
