The Cull - Scotland's Deer Dilemma

The future of the Scottish Highlands is under threat.

With red deer dominating the ecosystem, should these landscapes become wild once more? If so, what happens to the people that call these places home?

There are estimated to be over 350,000 red deer in Scotland.

Deer populations, when uncontrolled, have a massive impact on the landscapes of the Highlands. As a result, deer are culled each year in an attempt to manage and maintain the ecosystem that they are a central part of.

Over the last sixty years however, a debate has raged regarding the size, nature, and purpose of the deer cull.

The impact of this debate will change how people see, interact with and even inhabit the Scottish highlands.

'The Cull’ explores the different approaches to deer management taken by land owners and managers in Scotland, and delves into the reasoning behind the vitriol.

This film is about much more than Scotland’s largest land mammal — deer management is a vehicle for us to discuss the topic of how we interact with our natural environment, and how ’wild land’ is managed and used in Scotland today.

Talking to people from all over Scotland and on all sides of the debate, this documentary presents the issues as seen by real people on the ground, from crofters, gamekeepers, land managers, land owners, environmentalists & rewilders — all fighting to use and protect the land in the way they see fit.

The future of our planet is the biggest story of our generation, with many people battling day to day to better the planet for future generations. This film explores the fight for the Scottish Highlands.

Director Biography - Ted Simpson

Ted is a self shooting director and editor, working across commercial and documentary. His main interests lie in exploring stories of human connection to wild land and wild spaces.

Ted's style has been described as cinematic yet personal, with an ability as a self shooter to capture authentic moments in often hostile environments and difficult conditions.

In 2018, Ted released his first short film, 'This Is The Northland' which was recognised at several festivals across the UK, notably including the 2018 Kendal Mountain Film Festival, and won the 'New Talent' Award at Adventure Uncovered Film Festival.

Working with WWF International, Ted directed and produced a wildlife documentary online series entitled ‘Expedition Congo’, released in 2019. The six part series was the first of its kind for WWF, and looked at biodiversity in the Congo Basin. The series gained over a million lifetime views across all platforms.

Over the last two years, Ted has worked on ‘The Cull - Scotland's Deer Dilemma’, and found a passion and a talent for working within a longer format. This film allowed Ted to combine breathtaking cinematic capture of the incredible Highland vistas with intimate and personal characters, authentically representing all sides of the debate, and weaving a complex narrative throughout a compelling feature documentary.

‘The Cull’ is on the international festival circuit, with a world premiere to follow in Autumn 2020 to international audiences at Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival.

Director Statement

The future of our planet is the biggest story of our generation, with many people battling day to day to better the planet for future generations. Our documentary ‘The Cull - Scotland’s Deer Dilemma’ explores the fight for the Scottish Highlands.

The debate surrounding our relationship with wilderness is a conversation that takes place all across the globe, with parallels in every continent and ecosystem. But this film to me is a challenge - a challenge to examine how we perceive and manage the 'wild land' closest to us.

Deer management in Scotland is a topic that goes largely undiscussed within greater populations of the UK, but the topics that it impacts on - environmentalism, climate change, politics, cultural heritage - are vitally important, and the themes of how we see ourselves and interact with our environment are truly global.

Ultimately, I hope 'The Cull' challenges the audience to think deeper when we look at ourselves and how we interact with, care for, and perceive our wild spaces - and in turn foster a greater appreciation for our place in them.
