Experiencing Interruptions?

the blurry in a still world

LEA, emotionally numb and adrift, embarks on a night out alone in an attempt to feel something. She meets the charismatic CEE, a foreign-born college student, who's backpacking across his home continent for the first time. As they befriend one another and he tries to help her snap out of her condition, the lines between them begin to blur in more ways than one.

Director Biography - Adrian Hui

I'm a 21-year old creative based in New York City, though I was born and raised in Hong Kong and have lived in Toronto, Canada as well.

In my personal work I write/direct, I aim to tell sincere stories with a contemporary resonance — my hope is to capture the essence of coming-of-age within a cultural landscape that often feels alienating and disconnected.

Currently, I'm a senior in the B.F.A. Film and Television program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Besides my native English, I'm also fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese.

Director Statement

Going to a party/rave/whatever — can be a veneer. It’s an outlet for us to escape from the struggles we're going through in other realms of life. There’s a catharsis to be found from losing oneself in a crowd, surrounded by strangers in the dark, uplifted by a sort of communal exhilaration that’s difficult to come by in any other setting.

But have you been in the position where even that momentary joy is stripped away, unable to be released? It’s a deeply nauseating feeling, when you try to will yourself to feel better, to let loose and just have fun, only to realize that...you can’t. Guilt creeps in, as if you’ve done something wrong. You think to yourself, why don’t I feel good? This is supposed to make me feel good.

With this film, I aimed to arrive at an authentic representation of numbness. Feeling numb is not just the lack of feeling. It's a feeling in and of itself.

I hope you'll find something in "the blurry in a still world" that resonates with you.
