the 4th of July

The 4th of July
Not an ordinary day in New York, not an ordinary day in a relationship. The film shows documentary images of the preparations and celebration of Independence Day in New York. On the sound level, a woman (voice: Cynthia Beatt) tells of the end of a relationship.
Faroqhi shows pictures of New York just before the fall of the Twin Towers. Since then, the images have lost their innocence. Police barriers, fire trucks and explosions are charged with new meaning by the events of history.

Director Statement

The film experiment "the 4th of July" mixes 8mm and digitally filmed material and juxtaposes elements of documentary and fictional storytelling.

The material was shot in July 2001 in NYC. Three months later, the September 11 terrorist attacks shocked the world and changed the face of the city. The events also changed the connotations of this film. There seems to be a premonition of the catastrophic events to come.

The narration tells an intimate love story and shows that private and public experiences are always intertwined.
